Mary is a lovely, quiet girl. When she was a little girl, she had no secrets from her mother, who was very pleased with her. How do you feel when you have to give a talk in front of class? What about when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?

Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts (专家)have found that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.

It’s OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a case of how much.

Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.

If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.

You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to let good opportunities(机会)pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practice your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There’s nothing to be afraid of.

1.What kind of shyness can be bad according to the passage?

A. You find it hard to enjoy yourself at a party.

B. You feel a little nervous when you go to a new place.

C. You seldom go outside, afraid of meeting new people.

D. You have a red face when you’re asked to answer a question in class.

2.If you have to practice your spoken English in class, ________.

A. just do it B. just refuse to do it

C. you’d better ask someone to help you D. tell your teacher you’re too shy to do that

3.We can infer(推理) from the passage that ________.

A. kids are all born shy B. you can’t change yourself

C. shy people can also be successful D. shy people aren’t good at working with others

4.What’s the best title for this passage?

A. Are you too shy? B. Think more for others!

C. Find out what you’re like! D. Once he was shy just like you!

People have been interested in color and its effects for hundreds of years. More recently, research has turned to the question of how different colors can help students learn better.

Believe it or not, some colors can affect a child’s IQ. For example, a simple black and white color scheme may cause IQ to become low, while the good use of reds and oranges may raise it as much as 15 points. Be careful not to use too much, however, a little red is exciting, but too much makes people uncomfortable. Bright yellow is exciting to the brain, while the color green is thought to encourage creativity.

Use blue and green to calm yourself. Blue, especially, can cause you to calm down. Something blue in a reading area, for example, may help you focus (集中于) on what you are reading. But too much dark blue can make you sad, so use light blue on walls or large floor areas.

If you are struggling to read, try a different color of paper. According to a study, 80 percent of children who had difficulty in reading improved their understanding when they put something grey or blue over their pages. Do not use bright colors here, as they become difficult to look at after a while.

However, use bright colors like red, orange and yellow for important points. These colors attract the eye and may help you notice details.

The same color of the walls of a room do not help you focus on your studies , but make you slow in understanding. Colors, on the other hand, make the senses active and encourage learning. Use primary colors red, yellow and blue in a proper way. Then how do you make your choices of color? It mainly depends on your space, the lighting and the function of the room.

1.The color grey may help you ________.

A. read better B. calm down C. raise IQ D. feel creative

2.If you want to remember some important facts, you may use the colors ________.

A. green and blue B. grey and blue C. red and yellow D. black and white

3.Which is most important when you choose the color for your room?

A. Your IQ and abilities. B. The use of your room.

C. Your likes and dislikes. D. The location of your room.

4.Which might be the proper title for the passage?

A. What should we learn about colors? B. Why are people interested in colors?

C. Where should we be careful with colors? D. How do colors affect our learning abilities?

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home to visit some of the old and sick people there because they can’t take care of themselves.

First we visit Mrs. Sokol. I call her “The Cook.” She likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook in Russia. People would come from miles, just to taste her chicken soup.

Next we visit Mr. Lipman. I call him “The Singer” because he loves to sing for us. Whenever he does, his voice fills the air, clear and full of energy.

I also enjoy Mrs. Kagan’s stories about her own experiences during the old days. I call her “The Memory Lady.”

One day Grandpa got very sick and the doctor said they didn’t think he would get better.

It was time to visit the nursing home again. I had to go alone. Everyone was surprised when I told them that my grandpa was ill and in hospital.

A few days later, Grandpa was not able to sit up, eat or even speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn’t see me cry. Suddenly, I heard someone singing. I looked up. It was the Singer. Behind her were the Cook. and the Memory Lady. The Cook brought her famous homemade chicken soup. The Memory Lady held Grandpa’s hand and told us how Grandpa once came to visit her in a snowstorm, just to bring her some roses for her birthday.

Before I realized it, visiting hours were up. That evening, Grandpa called the nurse in and said he was hungry. Soon he began to sit up. Finally he was able to get out of bed. It is really a miracle (surprising event), isn’t it?
