Do you think of white when someone talks about a polar bear? In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just appears to be white. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them to find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2 to 3 babies at a time. They don't leave their mothers until they are about 2. 5 years old.

However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are about 20,000 polar bears in the world. The ones that are left are trying to survive today. The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice-polar bears mostly inhabit(居住于) the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming(全球变暖), pollution, hunting and so on.

Ordinary people don't care., but great people have the power and want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Ordinary people will wait, but great people will find a new world. Join me and save the polar bears, and, of course, the tigers, the giant pandas and'. . .

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark (作记号)the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me and to my surprise, I found that about half the things were true. I brought the list back to my dad. He refused(拒绝) to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t close your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”

Many years has passed. I often think of that thing. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure(珍惜) all your life!

Milu deer(糜鹿) ,a kind of animal with large horns(角) ,used to be common in China long ago. Like other deer, they lived together and ate grass and the soft parts of trees. People often killed Milu deer for food or sport. The Ming and Qing dynasties(朝代) did not protect them and killed many. That is how the Milu deer disappeared(消失) from China.

Luckily, before all of them lost their lives, someone took some deer to Britain to improve the environment of the beautiful park which belonged to Duke of Bedford(贝德福特公爵). He liked them so much that he took them from China to Britain. Milu deer liked the cool, wet weather in England and their number increased (增加)year by year. As a result, when in 1985,the government of China wanted to bring back the Milu deer, the Duke of Bedford was able to help. The first deer came back to China to the Nanhaizi Milu Park 20 kilometres south of Beijing and the centre in Dafeng, Jiangsu Province.

The deer certainly seem happy to be back in China because their number has grown quickly. There are now so many of them that people have opened a new centre for them in Hubei Province. At the moment the Milu deer live in centres where people protect and care for them. We hope that one day there will be enough animals to let them live in the wild again.

Can plants eat people? Maybe not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap(捕蝇草).

The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly(苍蝇) touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses(压) the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.

Plants are living things that have leaves and roots and grow in earth. Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, especially nitrogen(氮). Animal meat has a lot of nitrogen, so some plants eat meat to get what they need. Let’s hope that some of the bigger plants don’t get the same idea!
