Giving gifts is a kind of knowledge, and also one kind of strategy(策略).In the western countries, you should be careful of giving gifts.Never give a gift in a job interview or at a business meeting.Gifts are usually given during special holidays, or as a “thank you” for special invitations. When arriving at a special party, you may give your gift to the host once the introductions are made. Here are a few rules:

Be modest(不太贵的) with your gift.Do not buy gifts that are too expensive, such as a Swiss watch,a gold ring or a gold necklace.A special food from your country, a bottle of wine, candies, or flowers are the best if you do not know the host very well. But be sure that your gift will not draw much attention. You can usually say something like “I hope you will like it.” when you offer your gift.

Be careful of giving wine.A bottle of wine is usually all right if you know your host drinks wine. But hard alcohol(酒精) such as whisky(威士忌) should only be given as a gift when you know the host well and are certain that they would like such a gift.Flowers are good, but remember:roses are for special love. You have to be careful.

A small cultural gift from your country is usually very good.Make sure that your gift is packed(包装) nicely.A nice card with it will be better.

A greeting is a way of saying “Hello” to someone.People in different countries greet each other in different ways. The following are some examples.

In the United States, people usually shake hands. The handshake has an interesting origin(起源).It started long ago as a way of showing people that you weren't carrying a weapon(武器).Shaking the person's right hand while looking him or her in the eye is the usual way.

Handshakes are also common in other parts of the world, including Britain and Russia. In Russia,a man often holds another man's hands very strongly during the handshake. Most people in New Zealand also greet each other by shaking hands. However, the Maori(毛利人) people in New Zealand greet each other by pressing their noses together.

In other countries, such as France and Belgium, hugging and kissing are more common when two people meet.In those cultures, people kiss each other on the cheek(面颊).The number of kisses is different from country to country. In Saudi Arabia(沙特阿拉伯),men might hug and kiss each other(but not with a woman) on the cheek. In some eastern countries, including Japan, bowing is the traditional way of greeting people. The strangest custom, though,is probably in Tibet,China.People there usually stick out(伸出) their tongues(舌头) to greet others.
