Do you know how many numbers there are in your cellphone number? Your cellphone number has 11 digits(数字). You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. China has the longest cellphone numbers in the world, longer than the US or Australia. Why is that?

The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communications Corporation and 186 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which area the number is registered (注册) in. And the last four digits are random. You may get the last numbers that you like or not.

The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.

Cellphone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (联系) for a long time , you may find its owner has changed.

Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit cellphone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.

It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.

No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.

It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

Touch is one of the most important of our five senses. It is one of the first senses we develop. One of the most commonly accepted forms of touch among people is also one of the first experiences we have in the world-A hug !

There is no better way to understand the importance of hugs than to lose them. For those who have experienced the loss of hugs ,you will know how important they are to share.

A recent research has shown that when people hug , the brain releases(释放)the chemical which increases our willingness to trust and reduces fear. It has also shown that hugs are great for your heart.

In 1995,a pair of newly born twins was being cared for in hospital. While one of the twins seemed quite healthy, her sister was not. After trying different medical treatments, the nurse on duty, Gayle Kasparian , placed the twins in bed together. The twins immediately snuggled(依偎)up to each other. As one placed her arm around the other, the weak baby became better gradually. How great the power of a hug is !

The need for hugs doesn't disappear as we grow older, though it seems we are less willing to give them. Research on people of all ages has proven that a hug is necessary for physical and emotional health.
