Family fights are never pleasant. Whether you are dealing with a loud sister or a stubborn(固执的) mom or Dad, the situation can be bad.

What if it could be different? What if family fights and conflicts(冲突) could be turned into chances to become closer? What if problems could be solved with everyone walking away feeling more deeply cared for and loved?

Family fighting is, on one level, about power. Someone is telling someone else what to do. In a short moment, bad feelings can be brought out and the fight is on. You can go down that old road or you can try something different.

In any fight, you have a need to be listened to and understood. People raise their voices and shout at each other because they’re not being listened to. You want your mom or dad to listen and understand. You want your brother or sister to listen and care. But you always seem to forget that the person you’re fighting with has the same need to be listened to. So if you can put aside your need for a few minutes, the situation will change quickly. Give the other person some time to express his or her feelings, and you’ll have your turn to be listened to.

And while you are listening, you have to listen for the right information. The best way to do this in emotional(情绪激动的) situations is to pay no attention to most of the words because many people can’t express what they are feeling with the words alone, especially when they are not calm.

But if the situation starts to get out of hand, it would be wise to just calm down and leave the problem until later because many fights happen at the wrong time. The situation will die down quickly, usually in less than 30 seconds. You can either move on to problem solving or reach an agreement to work on it at a better time.

This way, everyone will feel respected and listened to, even when there is conflict, feelings will be understood and respected, and it will bring your family closer together.

Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. Highs winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less then an hour.

A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia’s east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.

A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转), the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth’s rotation isn’t big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon(台风)or cyclone.

So what’s the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.

All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.

A. It hit Australia’s east coast in March.

B. The wind speed reached 263 km/h.

C. It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.

D. The flooding stopped after three days.

2.How does a tropical cyclone happen?

A. When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.

B. When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.

C. When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.

D. When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h

3.How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon?

A. From the time it takes place. B. From where it takes place.

C. From how it takes place. D. From how many people it kills

4.Which can be the best title for the passage?

Mark’s brother, Jamie, rang Mrs. Grady’s doorbell. “You know her better than I do, Mark. You do the talking.”

“Hi, Mrs. Grady,” said Mark when their neighbour opened her door. “Would you like us to shovel(铲雪)your sidewalk and driveway?”

Shoveling was Jamie’s idea, a way to make enough money for the new Ocean Kingdom video game that came out the next day.

Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”

“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said.

“If that’s OK,” Mark added.

“Oh dear,” Mrs. Grady sounded disappointed (失望的). “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”

Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.”

As they walked back, Mark looked quickly over his shoulder. Mrs. Grady stood at her window, watching them.

She didn’t look like the person who came to make him safe last summer when Mr. Dunn’s collie(牧羊犬), Goldie, get away from her backyard. Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. And Goldie had boxed him in between the wooden fence(栅栏)and the cedar hedge (雪松树篱).

Mark had tried to call for his dad, but his tongue (舌头) seemed locked behind his teeth.

Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. “Hold on, Mark. I’m coming!” She picked up a broom. “Goldie!” She’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had appeared quickly between Mark and the dog.

“Goldie, go home!” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along.

When Mark’s father had appeared, he’d said to Mrs. Grady, “That was very brave! Thank you.”

Mrs. Grady had laughed. “It was nothing. Good neighbours watch out for each other, don’t they?”

And now Mrs. Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer.

He smiled and then dug deep into the snow.

“Hey!” Jamie shouted. “What are you doing?”

Mark couldn’t explain about Goldie and watching out for neighbours. “I like Mrs. Grady’s cookies,” he said and continued.

“It’ll take you all day,” his brother complained. “We’ll never get that game.”

Mark kept digging. Surprisingly, Jamie joined in.

Mark smiled. Jamie had known all along it was the right thing to do.

“Once the other neighbours see the good job we’ve done, they’ll line up to hire us,” said Jamie. “We’ll make money soon enough.” As usual, he had it all worked out.

1.How did Mark and Jamie feel when Mrs. Grady refused to pay?
