When do you think of a forest, what do you see? Just trees Or do you see many other things, such as
singing birds, colorful plants and wild flowers?
The forest is a whole world of its own. It is full of many different living things (生物). But even though
they are all different, they have one thing in common: they all need each other in order to live on.
The trees feed the forest "people" by making food in their leaves; by using sunlight to join water and
minerals(矿物) from the soil and air. Their deep network of roots Joins the soil together and stops it from
dying out, making it possible for living things to live in it. Human beings (人类) are like the living things in
the forest. We need one another in order to live. We need the farmers to grow our food, railroad and truck
drivers to bring it to our shops and clerks (售货员) to sell it to us. We need people to prepare our food and
cook it and others to take our waste things away. Then, of course, we need doctors, nurses, government
leaders, mailmen, telephone operators, and many others. We also need other human beings in another way.
We need people for friendship, to talk over our problems, exchange ideas. Think how lonely and unhappy
you would be if you lived all alone.
Life is a matter of giving and taking. We need to help other people as much as we need other people to
help us. Think what a good feeling you have when you have done something for someone else. You know,
being a volunteer is so great!

Very often, new-born babies are not beautiful. They are wrinkled (多皱的) or hairless, or they have an
angry look on their faces. They seem to say, "Get away! I hate everybody." But to a parent, that hairless,
wrinkled, angry-faced baby is the most beautiful and perfect child in the world. When that proud father or
mother asks you, "Well, what do you think of my baby? Isn't she beautiful?" What are you going to say? Is
the time for the truth? Of course not!
You look that proud father in the eye and say, "Yes, she is! She's really a beauty. She's one in a million.
She's going to be a movie star! I can tell! She's as beautiful as a picture."
In English, this is a white lie. White lies don't hurt people. They are not cruel (残忍的) or angry words.
People use them to make a difficult thing a little easier. When people don't want to meet someone, or eat
something new that they really don't like at a friend's house, they tell a white lie. They are trying to be kind.
They don't want to hurt someone. It's important to be honest, but many people feel that being kind is
sometimes more important.

I remember as a small child at gatherings (聚会) with family or friends, someone would ask: "What are you
going to be when you grow up?"
At first I said I wanted to be a cowboy or some super hero. Later it was a fireman, artist, architect
(建筑师)… As I grew older my dreams of the future changed. When at last I was in college, I was asked: "What
will you major (主修) in?" By then I had my heart set on becoming a computer programmer. So I studied and
prepared for that life. I was designing software full-time for much of my life.
I am content (满意的) that could realize my dream. However, for many, there is a "thief" who goes around
stealing our dreams.
We find ourselves close to reaching our goal. Then we hear this small voice inside our heads saying: "You'll
never make it." "You can't possibly do this." "Very few have ever done this successfully." On and on, the voice
predicts (预言) some kind of failure.
Don't listen to that voice. There are no overnight (突如其来的) successes, but with perseverance
(坚定不移). It will come. Imagine yourself in the life you dream of living. Then in your heart, believe it will
happen for you, as it has for others. Then work, work, and work! You get the picture.
Be true to your dream, and don't let anyone steal it from you — especially yourself. You can do anything
your heart desires, so don't give up or give in.

It seems that everybody tells lies-well, not big lies, but "white lies". Telling white lies isn't really that bad.
Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect friendship or they don't want to hurt someone. Here
are some ways they do it.
      ★ Giving false excuses.
Sometimes people lie because they don't want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a
party. You think it will be boring, so you say you're busy.
★ Lying to make someone feel good.
Often we don't tell the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks dinner for you, but
it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No! You probably say "Mmm, this is delicious!"
★ Lying to hide bad news.
Sometimes, we don't want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a terrible day at work,
but you don't want your family to worry about you. So if your parents ask you about your day, you just say
everything was fine.

Happiness is for everyone. In fact, ①happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When
you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents
are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will congratulate
you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do
something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them,
you can find that happiness is always around you. ②Happiness is not the same as money, it's a feeling of
your heart
. When you are poor, you can also be very happy, because you have something else that can't be
bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you
have more chances to challenge (挑战) yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad
luck. ③If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and-lucky person.
