More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It is fun, healthy and good for the environment.
Maybe that's why there are 1.4 billion bicycles and only 400 million cars on roads worldwide today. Bikes
can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!
Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighbourhood. You may discover something new all around you.
Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. You can bike to work

In most parts of the world, many students help their school make less pollution. They join in
"environment (环境) clubs". In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.
Here are the things students often do.
Turn off the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste (浪费) twenty to forty tons of water an
hour?
In a year, that would fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.
No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car-not the students and not the teachers!
Cars give pollution to our air, so remember:
    Walk, jump, bike or run.
Use your legs! It's lots of fun!
No-garbage (垃圾) lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students
to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the

every living thing.
Without it we can't live. Bad air makes people ill. We must have fresh air to keep us in good health.
In the city there are many people and there are too many cars running on the roads the gas which the cars
spread (传播) out is full of poison (有毒). Every day we breathe it in again and again. This makes us feel sick.
Besides the cars, there are many factories too. From the chimneys (烟囱) of these factories, we usually get

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce a child's chance of becoming
short-sighted, a research shows. _____
The Australian government researchers believe that the sunlight is good for people's eyes. They compared
the vision (视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the
Singaporean children were short-sighted - this rate (比率) was ten times higher than Australian children.
_____ However, the Australia children spent an average (平均) of two hours a day outdoors — 90 minutes
more than the Singaporean children.
Professor (教授) Ian Morgan said, "Humans are naturally long-sighted.____ We're also seeing more and
more short-sighted children in cities all around the world- and the main reason may be that city children spend
less time outdoors."

Americans love sports-they love to play them, to watch them on television, and to talk about them. But
this hobby sometimes has serious results-at least to the players. For example, when people play tennis,
sometimes they hurt their elbow (肘部) and in this way they develop "tennis elbow". Also it is easy to hurt
a knee in a football game. These injuries (损伤) happen while the player is having fun, but they still hurt.
A few months ago, Kathleen Simmons, who loves playing volleyball, hurt her knee in a volleyball game.
Her doctor told her that she needed a very difficult operation (手术) or she might not be able to play again.
She felt very sad and didn't know what to do.
Then Simmons learned about "video operation". With the help of this new science in medicine, doctors
can now repair many injuries and get people back on the playing field and back to their jobs much faster.
Simmons found a hospital that was using this new science and went to see the doctor there. The doctors
told her the operation could help.
For this operation, her doctor didn't have to open her knee. Instead he put a very small camera lens
(镜头) inside her knee. The lens sent back pictures, which appeared on a television screen. As he worked,
he could see the inside of her knee on the TV. With the help of the large pictures on the screen, the doctor
knew exactly what to do when he was making the repairs
.
Simmons started walking five days after her operation. "My knee hurt a lot the first few days," she said.
"But I felt better very quickly." Now, six months after her operation, Simmons can do everything she did
before her injury. "It feels like a new knee," she said. "I can even play volleyball again."
