The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means(通讯设备). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution(污染). To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, sell it, drink it and even hear it.

Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in a place, men moved to another place. But this is not longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad to all living things in the world, but it is not only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily.

Many countries are making rules(法规) to fight pollution. They stop the people from burning coal(煤) in houses and factories in the city, and from blowing dirty smoke into the air.

The pollution of SO2 is now the most dangerous problem of air pollution. It is caused(引起) by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must keep careful of the rise in population at the same time.

1.Our world is becoming much smaller ________.

3.Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means ________.

[ ]

B.air pollution
C.noise polluting
D.rubbish(垃圾)

4.Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because ________.

[ ]

A.it's bad to all living things in the world

B.it makes much noise

C.it has made our rivers and lakes dirty

D.it makes us become angry more easily

5.Which of the following is not true?

[ ]

A.Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.

B.The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world's population does.

C.From now on, maybe people try to go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike. It is helpful to fight against the problem of SO2.

D.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people.

答案:B;D;C;A;D

Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago,正是设题的反句,其中对比的关键词是much harder thanmuch easier than

Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad to all living things in the world,…

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping-watching TV and buying things by phone. Now teleshopping is starting in Europe(欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.

Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $ 100 million. In France there are two teleshopping channels, and the French spend about $ 20 million a year to buy things through those channels.

In Germany, until last year teleshopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed(允许) more teleshopping. Other channels can open for telebusiness, including(包括) the largest American teleshopping company and a 24-hour teleshopping company. German businesses are hoping this new teleshopping will help them sell more things.

Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call teleshopping “junk(垃圾) on the air”. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality(质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV.

The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.

Our village carpenter(木匠), John Hill, came one day and made a dining table for my wife. He made it just the right size to fill the space between the two windows. When I got home that evening, John was drinking a cup of tea and writing out his bill(账单) for the job.

My wife said to me, quietly, “That's his ninth cup of tea today.” But she said, in a loud voice, “It's a beautiful table, dear, isn't it?”

“I'll decide about that when I see the bill,” I said.

John laughed and gave me his bill for the work. I read:

  One dining table
10 November 1989
  Cost((成本;费用)) of wood
  Paint(油漆)
1.50
Work, 8 hours (£1 an hour)
8.00
  Tota1(合计)
36.50

When I was looking at the bill, John said, “It's been a fine day, hasn't it? Quite sunny.”

“Yes,” I said. “I'm glad it's only the 10th of November.”

“Me, too,” said John. “You wait-it'll be a lot colder by the end of the month.”

“Yes. Colder-and more expensive! Dining tables will be £20 more expensive on November 30th, won't they, John?”

John looked hard at me for half a minute. Was there a little smile in his two blue eyes? I gave his bill back to him.

“If it isn't too much trouble, John,” I said, “please add it up again. You can forget the date.”

I paid him £26.50 and he was happy to get it.

1.Why did John talk about the weather when the writer was looking at the bill?

A Because he didn't want the writer to go through the bill carefully.

B.Because it was really a fine day.

C.Because he wanted the writer to check the bill carefully.

D.Because he wanted to tell the writer what the weather was like.

2.Why did the writer say that dining tables would be £ 20 more expensive on November 30th?

[ ]

A.Because it was difficult to make dining tables in cold weather.

B.Because paint would be more expensive.

C.Because the cost of wood would be more expensive.

D.Because he thought John would almost certainly add the date to the cost of the dining table.

3.The writer thought John would ask for ________ if he made a dining table on the last day of November.

[ ]

A.£20.00
B.£46.50
C.£56.50
D.£26.50

4.When the writer gave him the money, John was happy because ________.

[ ]

A.he got what he should get for his work

B.he got much more money for his work

C.he got the money easily

D.he didn't have to add up the costs again

5.From the story we know that ________.

[ ]

A.John made a mistake in the bill

B.John tried to fool the writer in order to get more money for his work

C.John had written out the bill before the writer got home

D.John still wanted to get £36.50 for his work in the end

A Letter From Mar(火星)

  Dear Earthmen,

I have enjoyed my stay on your interesting planet. I think I understand the life on earth now and I would like to give my impressions(印象).

First of all you live in boxes. Every morning you leave your big boxes and get into smaller boxes on wheels(轮子). All these small boxes run around and around, and finally stop to rest. You leave these boxes on wheels and go to very large tall boxes.

After resting all day you get back in your little boxes and return to your big boxes. There you sit and look at very small glowing boxes with moving pictures on the front.

There is only one thing I don't understand. I went to a football game one day. A group of angry boys fought a little round ball. Everyone shouted but they kept fighting. They were angry, because they had been kept in boxes all day. I think.

Thanks you earthmen for this chance to get to know you.

Yours
