题目内容

A person will breathe shallowly and high in the chest when getting visual(视觉)information. She will breathe deeply and slowly when getting kinesthetic(肌肉运动知觉的)information. And somewhere in between when getting auditory(听觉)information.

When getting visual information, the person will be likely to look up, straighten up her body, and make gestures(手势)into space. When getting auditory, she/he will be likely to look to the side, maybe slant(倾斜)her/his head and cross her/his arms. When accessing kinesthetic, she will tend to look down and slump over.

The person will speak faster and more loudly when getting visual information than when getting auditory information. When getting kinesthetic, she will speak with a lower, slower tone of voice.

You can be more or less of a specialist in understanding and explaining all of these. You don't really need to know them all well to do basic body movements. As long as you notice that, there are changes, and you notice when someone is looking happy and satisfied, and when she isn't, then you can do just well in your part.

But if you know body language really well you can do magic with it. People will see that you are reading their minds, when really you are just looking at them.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr.Gibbs.He didn’t look like any 1 I 2 .He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very 3 person.

When Dr.Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees.Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you 4 them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and 5 the weaker trees early.

He talked about how watered trees grew shallow(浅的)roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water 6 the earth by themselves. 7 roots were very important.

So he never watered his trees. He'd planted an oak and, 8 watering it every morning, he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper.I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.

Dr.Gibbs died several years 9 I left home.Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees 10 I watched him 11 about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now.I planted some trees a few years later and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of 12 too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they 13 a lot.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons.Mostly I pray(祈祷)that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer.I know my children are going to face difficulties. There's always a cold wind 14 somewhere, so 15 we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we can face it strongly and won't be beaten down.

Reggie couldn’t hear a thing. He was a normal boy, but he had been born deaf. He was well known to everyone in town, and they were all very fond of him. 35 unfortunately, he was always treated differently from everyone else. Children 36 that they would hurt him, adults acted like he was unable to understand them, as if he was a baby.

Reggie didn’t like this very much. But the person who disliked it the most was his friend Michael, who decided that things had to be 37 . Michael’s father was the town’s Mayor, and Michael managed to convince him that this year, in honor of Reggie, they should offer one day to deaf people. During that whole day everyone in town would have to 38 earplugs(耳塞).

People liked the idea, because everyone loved Reggie. The day became known 39 the Day of Silence, and when it arrived everyone stuck plugs in their ears with great 40 . That morning was filled with jokes and laughter. But, as the hours passed, people became aware of (意识到) how 41 life was when you couldn't hear anything. However, learning about how life was more difficult for the deaf was 42 compared to the greatest discovery of the day: Reggie was amazing!

On that day no one was thinking of Reggie as 43 a deaf person. This meant he could be treated just like any other little boy; and people saw a whole new side of him. Not only that, but Reggie had a 44 mind. On that day, using his usual gestures (手势), Reggie was the one who could communicate best with everyone. This meant that people paid more attention to what he was saying, and they were surprised by his intelligence and his ability to find solutions to almost any problem. They realized that in normal life all Reggie needed was a little more time than others to communicate. That was the only 45 .

So the Day of Silence was the day when Reggie’s true nature became known. And it was the day that everyone realized you have to give people a chance to show how 46 they are.
