One morning when I was 11, I explored the town’s abandoned (废弃的) round grain barn. I found a chained sliding door that was wide enough for me to pass through.

Inside, there was a heavy smell of dead mice in the dark. After my eyes adjusted, I noticed a shaft (通风管道) that rose all the way to the top of the barn. On one side was a one-man elevator with a long rope and roller.

I stepped onto the platform, gave the rope a drag and the elevator began sliding up the shaft, but stopped halfway. After a brief panic attack, I noticed there were some holes formed a ladder (阶梯). For reasons known only to an 11-year-old, I decided it would be better to go up than down. So, with shaking hands, I began climbing up.

After what seemed like forever, I reached the top of the shaft. I stood up and found nothing of interest. It was just an empty room with a ladder leading up to the roof. I tried my best to climb all the way up but it was very difficult. There was too much heavy dust. When dust was blown, I even couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know how long it took but luckily I climbed up, popped the straw roof and saw a bright blue sky.

I suddenly realized the dust and powder pouring out of the top could draw attention. So when the dust had settled, I climbed down and slipped out of the chained door. I’m not sure if I was more excited about being alive or about not being caught, but I ran all the way back home.

The winner of the fifth season of the China Central Television's Chinese Poetry Conference (中国诗词大会) was shown on Feb 9. Peng Min, who has fallen at the final hurdle twice before, finally won the crown (王冠) for himself.

The competitors vary in age, from teenagers to adults. Peng, 36, an associate senior editor (副主编) of a poetry magazine, is one of the most familiar (熟悉的) faces of the show. He can recite around 1,000 poems.

With a master's degree in literature, Peng is always the hot favorite to win the prize, but, surprisingly, he's lost two finals in a row-the second season he lost to a 16-year-old high school student, Wu Yishu, and in the third season he was beaten by deliveryman (送货员) Lei Haiwei.

He cried after losing the season three final, “I realized that if I compete and fail again, at least I've tried, but if I don't sign up, that means I'm more of a failure because I'm afraid of trying. Therefore, when season five came around, I decided to give it another go,” Peng recalls.

The season five final came down to Peng and 11-year-old Han Yaxuan-again he was facing a much younger rival. This time, though, there was to be no mistake and victory was finally his.

“I want to tell people who have a similar experience that, even though you go through all kinds of misfortune (不幸的) or difficulties, as long as you are brave enough to look up, there will always be a light in the sky to guide you out of the darkness,” Peng said in his speech. “Thousands of years later, all of our shadows will vanish, only the beauty of poems will last.”
