Andy was still traveling in Spain when he realized he had to confirm(确认) his   ①  home with the airline company. He was visiting Spain in order to improve his Spanish. When he was speaking to people face to face, he had no difficulty understanding what they said. However, when he was speaking on the phone, he still had a problem. Andy called the airline. And the clerk confirmed that his plane was leaving at nine o’clock three days from that day. She also told Andy to be at the airport a little earlier in order to check in his luggage and get a seat.

Since he was leaving in three days, Andy didn’t lose any time. He visited as many places as he could. He thought that it would probably be a while before he had enough money again. He wished he could come back and spend a year in Spain.

Too quickly, the final day arrived. Andy left early for the airport before take-off. He hated to rush. When he went to the clerk to show his ticket, the clerk looked at the ticket in surprise , “Why, sir, but your flight was at nine o’clock in the morning, and now it is eight in the evening.” “But I confirmed my flight,”insisted Andy.“Will I have to pay for another ticket?”

“No, Sir. However, the next flight out will be three days from now.”

Assertiveness is the ability to confidently express your opinions, feelings,attitudes, and rights, in a way that doesn't infringe（侵犯） the rights of others.

    Many of us are taught that it is not nice to consider our own needs above those of others. If someone says or does something that we don't like, we should just be quiet and try to stay away from that person in the future.

    Why is Assertiveness important?

     If you don't know how to be assertive, you might experience:

•Depression - Anger, a sense of being helpless, hopeless, or of having no　control over your life.

•Resentment - Anger at others for taking advantage of you.

•Frustration - Why did I allow that to happen?

     Most people find it easier to be assertive in some situations than in others. This　makes perfect sense. It's a lot easier to hold your ground with a stranger than with　someone you love. But the more important the relationship is to you, the more　ｉｍｐｏｒｔａｎｔ it is to be assertive. Assertive behavior leads to increased respect from others！

      But before you decide to act assertively, you have to decide if you can live

 with the results. Although assertive behavior usually will result in a positive

 response  (积极的回应)，some people 　might react differently.

   How to be effectively（有效地） assertive:

 •Use "I" statements. Keep the focus on the problem you're having. "I'd like to be able to tell my stories without interruption." instead of "You're always interrupting my stories ! "

 •Use facts, not opinions. "Did you know that shirt has a hole?" instead of　"You're not going out looking like THAT, are you?"

 •Express ownership of your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. "I get angry when he breaks his promises. " instead of "He makes me angry. "

 • Make clear and direct requirements. Don't invite the person to say no. "Will  you please?" instead of　'Would you mind．．．?" or "Why don't you．．．?"

•Keep repeating your point. Use a low level and pleasant voice. Don't try to explain yourself.

More and more young people from China begin to celebrate（庆祝）Father’s Day. They send fathers presents, or invite them for a nice dinner. But do you know how Father’s Day started?

While Mrs Dodd, from America, was listening to a talk about Mother’s Day in a church in 1909, she had an ides of having Father’s Day to honor（纪念）her father, William Smart. Mr Smart used to be a soldier. His wife died when she gave birth to her sixth child. Mr Smart had to raise his six children alone. They lived a hard life. After Mrs Dodd grew up, she wanted to thank her father for what he had done for them. She wrote a letter to a church and asked for the third Sunday in June to be Father’s Day. The church agreed with her.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 in Washing ton. Children made special desserts and did other things to make their fathers happy. In 1924, President（总统）Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. People all over the country began to celebrate Father’s Day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.
