People cry when they feel very sad. They cry when something terrible happens, like a death in the
family. They cry when they feel very sad or very angry, they cry when they know they cannot do
anything about a problom, and they feel helpless.
They also cry when they feel very good. They cry when they have been very worried about
something but find out everything is all right. They cry when something wonderful happens.
In the United States until lately, men were not supposed to cry. Crying was weak and only for
women. Men were supposed to be strong. But things are changing. Men  are beginning to realize that
it is all right to show their feelings. Women are learning  that sometimes they can do something about a
problem instead of just crying. They try not to cry in a public place or in front of a frightened child.
Chemists have been studying why people cry. They say the body produces two kinds of tears. One

poison chemicals in them. The body is getting rid of chemicals produced by strong feeling.

Jeanne Calment, a French woman, held the record for living the longest in the world. She died in 1995
at the age of 120 years and 238 days. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237
 days.
Jeanne Calment lived in a small old people's home in the south of France; her husband, her only child
and her grandson all died . She was nearly blind (瞎的) and deaf (聋的) and was always in a wheelchair,
but her doctor described her as being more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120. She
still had a lively sense of humor (幽默感). She said that God  forgot all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? Some doctors say that diet, exercise and no smoking are the three
important things. Jeanne Calment followed two of the tips (窍门). She always ate a healthy diet, and she
did exercise every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two
glasses of strong red wine a day, and she smoked (now only a little). And Jeanne Calment might have got
very good genes (基因) from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A man bought her house when she was 80 . He said he would pay her some money every year until she
died. It seemed (似乎)a good deal at the time, but the man paid her at least three times (倍)the value (价
值) of the house. Every year on her birthday Jeanne Calment sent him a card saying:
Sorry, I'm still alive!
1. How did Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
    A. She was sad.
    B. She was happy.
    C. She wanted to live longer.
    D. She thought she was going to die very soon.
2. Jeanne Calment lived so long because _____.
    A. she smoked only a little every day
    B. she didn't smoke or drink
    C. she drank two glasses of strong red wine every day
    D. she had the good genes from her parents, ate a healthy diet and did some exercise
3. The underlined word "deal" means _____.
    A. 交易
    B. 理想
    C. 事情
    D. 事业
4. Why does Jeanne Calment say "Sorry, I'm still alive" to the man every year on her birthday?
    A. Because she didn't want to live so long.
    B. Because she asked the man to pay her more than they first agreed.
    C. Because the man paid her much more money than the value of the house.
    D. Because the house was too expensive.

What would life be like if you lived on Mars (火星)? Would you be very thirsty because there is so
little water? Would you have strange neighbors?
We could ask the boy called Davey Martin for answers. His family moved from their nice Earth home
to a place on Mars. "His life must be very exciting!" you may say. But Martin doesn't agree.
There Is Nothing to Do on Mars is a book written by a US writer, Chris Gall. It tells of Martin's
experience on the red planet.
Martin moves around on a flying scooter (踏板车).  He builds a fort (堡垒) and looks for real
Martians with his robot dog, Polaris. He does that every day. "I am bored!" says Martin.
But when Polaris' nose leads to a great discovery, Martin's world changes. He digs a hole and finds
water.  It means there is a real ocean under the ground. Martin becomes a hero.
We may never have the chance to live on Mars, but we are like Martin sometimes. We often
complain, "I am bored!" or "There is nothing to do ! " The book may have a deeper lesson about life.
