One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he had ten cents left. He was hungry so he decided to beg* for a meal at the next house.

However, he lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. He only asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I pay you?"
"You don't pay me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught me never to accept the pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically*, but it also increased his believe in God and the whole human. He was about to give up and stop before this point.
Years later the young woman became fairly ill. The local doctors had no idea to deal with her illness. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists* can be called in to study her strange disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for the consultation*. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a light filled his eyes. Immediately, he got up and went down through the hospital hall into her room. Dressed in his doctor's uniform he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and decided to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her.
After Howard Kelly and his workmates worked hard for a long time, they won and the woman was saved. Dr. Kelly asked the business office to pass the final bill to him for agreement. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words:
"Paid." (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly
Tears of happiness came down out of her eyes as she prayed* silently: "Thank You, God. Your love has reached everywhere through hearts and hands of the human beings."

It was a quiet village in which there was a military(军队的) camp. It was far from the towns and cities and there were some high mountains around. Of course it was a good place for training the new soldiers. But it was difficult for the young men to go outside. Mr. White, an officer of forty, was strict with them and he hardly let them leave the camp.
Once Mr. White was ill in bed. He couldn't work and a young officer, Mr. Hunt, began to train the new soldiers instead of him. He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp. He was worried about it and stood at the gate. It was five to twelve when Mr. Hunt decided to go to the town and see what was happening to the young men. He started the car quickly and set off. At that moment the nine soldiers came back. It seemed they were all drunk. Of course they found the officer was angry.
"I'm sorry, sir," said the first soldier. "I left the town on time. But something was wrong with my bus on my way here. I had to buy a horse and made it run fast. Bad luck! It died and I had to run back."
And the other seven soldiers said they were late for the same reason. It was the last soldier's turn. He said, "I'm sorry, sir. I got on a bus on time, but…"
Having heard this, the officer became even angrier and stopped him at once. He called out, "If you say something was wrong with your bus, I'll punish you at once!"
"No, no, sir," said the young man. "My bus was all right, but the dead horses were in its way!"

Li, 14, is a Junior 1 student at Beijing’s Xingzhi Experimental School. Her parents are migrant workers(外来务工人员). They came to Beijing from a village in Luohe, He’nan two years ago. Her father now works as a cleaner and gets 500 yuan every month. Her mother has no job.

Dear editor,
My English teacher is very strict with us. Several days ago, when we were in class, Tom asked me a question. But my English teacher thought we were speaking in class. She asked us to stand at the back of the classroom for a few minutes. This made me unfair. After that, I feel nervous in her class, so I don’t like her class. However, I really want to learn English well. What should I do?
Yours,
Mike
Dear Mike,
I am sorry you are having difficulty with your English class. Every teacher wants his or her students to study hard. So I think you should have a talk with your English teacher and tell her what you were doing with Tom that day. If she knows your worries, maybe she will help you with your English. And she will be pleased to hear you want to learn English well. Of course, you should know that what your teacher did was good for you.
