It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I were sitting on the bench (长椅) at Washington Union Station, waiting for the train. A boy sat near us. His old jacket and dirty hands seemed to show that he was homeless.

“He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.

Just at that time, a man walked to him, “Excuse me, I bought two boxed meals for my son and me, but one is enough for us. We hate to waste food. Can you help us?”He handed the boy a boxed meal.

The boy thanked him and opened the box happily. Suddenly he stopped. He ran to an old woman in dirty clothes, “A man brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. Can you help me?” He placed the box in the old woman's hands.

“Sure, son, but you need to share the sandwich and cake with me. It's too much for me.”

We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with two cups of coffee and a salad. He went to the boy and the woman, “Excuse me ...”

I ran into a supermarket and bought something with my money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt warm inside.

Customs(习俗) on Eating

Food in China and western(西方的)countries is different. China has about 5000 years of history. They may spend half of their time on food. Chinese people choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials(新鲜的材料)to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can cook a chicken in over ten ways. 1. Western countries, like England or America, don’t have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets which only sell stored materials (储存的材料). 2.They are unhealthy for man’s body. Western people do not have many skills for cooking, and mostly they only boil, steam (蒸) and bake(烤) the food. By the way, western people are very good at making desserts (甜点)and chocolate. They can make very good cakes and chocolate. 3.

In China, the person who invites other people for meal would pay for the meal, but it’s not the same way in western countries. 4. They can afford(承担费用)it. They won’t be happy if you pay for them. In western countries like America or England, people will always give tips (小费) to the waiter(服务员)after they finish the meal in a restaurant. If you don’t, the waiter will not be happy. In China this only happens in some top restaurants and hotels in large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Another difference in eating is that: 5.

Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people may have more. They usually have afternoon tea when they would have fruit, cakes or biscuits with cheese (奶酪饼干).

A. These food are very sweet and they can make you become fat quickly.

B. Chinese people use chopsticks(筷子)but western people use knives and forks(餐叉).

C. Western people also prefer fast food like hamburgers and chips(薯条).

D. That’s why Chinese food is so popular around the world.

E. In western countries, people will think you only invite them but don’t need to pay for them.

J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (《哈利·波特与密室》) was published in July 1998.

American and British people both speak English. But there are a lot of differences in the ways they speak. J. K. Rowling made some changes for American kids in the Harry Potter books. For example, she used parking lot (停车场) instead of car park.

In October 1998, J. K. Rowling travelled to the United States for the first time to sell her books. At first, J. K. Rowling was worried that American children wouldn’t like her book as much as children in the United Kingdom did. But she was wrong. “When I did public readings,” she said, “they even all laughed in the same places as British children.”

J K. Rowling was surprised that many of the children had already read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The book wasn’t even published in the United States yet. They had ordered the book from England on the Internet because they couldn’t wait.

J. K. Rowling was more successful than she had ever dreamed. In the publishing world, no children’s books had ever been as popular as the Harry Potter books. Even popular children’s book writer Dr Seuss did not sell so many books.

When she returned to America, J. K. Rowling was met by, not just children, but crowds of adults. Why were so many adults reading a book written for children? It is because a really good story attracts people of all ages.
