Something behind Robinson Crusoe
People did not think of Robinson Crusoe as a rnadc-up story. They thought it had really happened. They thought there was a real man called Robinson Crusoe. The writer Daniel Defoe encouraged them to think it was not false, although most of the story is made up.
But people who read the book really thought of a real-life Robinson, a Scottish sailor (水手)called Alexander Selkirk. Like Robinson, he once lived alone on an island in the South Pacific and there was no island nearby. He lived there for four years. He survived by eating wild vegetables and wild goats. He had a bad accident and was nearly killed. He fell off a cliff (悬崖)when hunting a goat. He was only saved when the goat cushioned (缓冲)his fall. In 1709, he was saved. Two years later he arrived back in England.
