The 14-year-old Zhang Lei was riding home when a man suddenly jumped out from the roadside,
pulled him off his bike and rode to run off. Zhang was fairly scared, but he didn't run after the robber.
Instead, he found a telephone quickly and called the police at 110.

told him in his first-aid class (急救课). "An adult is much stronger than you. It is not safe to run after
an adult."

teenagers die in all kinds of accident in China every year.

themselves in unusual situations.
Sun Yan, 12, described her favorite first-aid lesson."I performed as a stranger knocking at a door. A
classmate stood inside the door and asked several questions before letting me in. Then we changed roles
and did it again. "Sun said,"We learned a lot while having fun at role-playing."

Dear sir,
I am writing to introduce myself, with the hope of getting the job you advertised in Daily News.
When I was a child, I was fond of English and always got good grades. In1994, after six years of hard
work in Beijing No.4 Middle School, I entered People's University. I studied English there for four years.
Luckily, I got my first job when I graduated. I taught English in Beijing No.4 Middle School from 1998
to 2001. Then I got the chance to receive further education in University of Hawaii in the US. That was a
precious experience of my life. I learnt a lot during those two years, especially the differences between
eastern and western cultures.
I came back to People's University in 2003. I worked as an assistant (助手) for 2 years and then as
a professor. So far I have got 8 years of working experience.
I won lots of awards. I was an"Excellent Student" of People's University in 1997, and an "Outstanding
Teacher" of Beijing No.4 middle school in 2000.
Thank you for reading my letter, and I will appreciate it very much if you can reply soon.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Gang

How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun was probably the world's first "clock",except(除了) in the far north, where the
Eskimos(爱斯基摩人) live. There,it's dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer.
But in most of the world, people have used ck.Even today,if you don't have a clock, you still

if it's morning,noon,or afternoon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the day time, for about six hours,
the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six
hours.the same thing happens again at night.there are two high tides and two low tides every 24hours.
Seaman on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is
their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes
direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clcok is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the
one in the picture, you would have what is called an hour glass. The sand in the hourglass goes
from the top part to the bottom part in exactly an hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the
sand will take another hour to go back again.
