MANY kids love to play with snow in the winter. But Long Chuan has come to hate it.
This year his hometown in Guizhou Province suffered from snowstorms for nearly a month. The heavy snow stopped cars and trains, broke the pylons (电塔) and turned tap water to ice.
Every day Long had to walk several kilometers to fetch drinking water. "I couldn't ride a bike and it took me 3 hours to walk to school. I can't remember how many times I slipped on the hard ice," said Long.
Long is not alone. This year millions of people in central and southern China had a freezing winter without enough water and electricity (电). The biggest snowstorms in 50 years killed more than 100 people. They also cost the country 111.1 billion yuan.
What's behind the snowstorms?
Experts say a special type of climate (气候) condition, La Nina, caused the storms. During a La Nina, the water in the Pacific Ocean (太平洋) near the equator (赤道) becomes colder than usual. It changes the weather around the world.
Besides China, Canada, the US and Middle Eastern countries also met with heavy snow storms this winter. The special climate caused the recent flooding in Australia, too.
However, experts say that people have damaged the environment. Global warming (全球变暖) may be causing these extreme (极端的) weather events to happen more and more often.
Little girl, big trouble
The name "La Nina" comes from Spanish. It means "little girl".
In the last century, there were 19 La Ninas. La Ninas often last several months. They usually bring China colder winters and hotter summers than usual.

As space science develops ,man has learned more and more about space .Space is only amazing but also dangerous .While working in space ,spacemen are facing danger as well as success.

Science have found out that radiation （辐射）is the greatest danger to spacemen in space .When spacemen are working in space ,they are in danger of radiation from the sun and other stars,which is bad for their health .The damage done by radiation won’t be discovered until their children or even grandchildren are born.Some special medicine may work a little ,but also really helepful medicine has been found so far.

Space junk is also thought as a great danger to spacemen .It’s reported that there are 9,000 man—made things flying in space.About 30﹪of these are satellites ,10﹪are spaceships ,and the rest are space junk .An explosion（爆炸）in 1996 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments,each at least 4mm in size ,and even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage .Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time They are working on helpful ways to do with space junk .

Although space is really dangerous ,it interests everyone on the earth .In the near future ,it may become usual for people to spend a few days in a space hotel .We may even choose do leave the earth and live a space in a few years .So we should care for space and do something to help improve the space environment.
