At 26, Jane Goodall had no college education or science training. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. “All through my childhood people said, ‘You can’t go to Africa. You’re a girl.’ ” Jane said. “ But my mother used to say, ‘If you really want to, there’s nothing you can’t do.’ ”

In 1957, 26yearold Goodall went to Kenya to work as a secretary. She met the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her hard work that he made her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African forest and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees* in a protection zone, recording the animals’ behavior and interactions.

For three months Goodall made little progress. But she said, “I never came close to giving up.” Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a piece of grass into an ant hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she came to the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered lots of ants on it. The discovery—that some animals use tools—was unknown to most scientists at the time.

Goodall saw chimpanzees show human-like feelings, such as anger and love. But she also discovered they were able to attack* against each other.

Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England’s Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to protect wildlife. “I love being in the forest with the chimpanzees,” she said. “ I’d rather be there than travel around from city to city.”

1What did Goodall’s mother think of her dream?

A.As a girl she should not go to the African forest.

B.As a girl she should stay away from dangerous animals.

C.She could make her dream come true if she made up her mind.

D.Her dream would remain a dream unless she got the right training.

3What’s Jane Goodall’s most important discovery?

A.Some animals use tools.

B.Ants are chimpanzees’ favorite food.

C.Like humans, animals have feelings.

D.Chimpanzees could attack each other strongly.

4According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

We do everything we can to hide from the sun in summer. Some wear hats, others buy umbrellas or sit under trees. But can you imagine what it would be like to have two suns over your head?

Well, the Kepler-47 system does have two stars in its sky, according to a discovery in the Science Journal.

The new system was found by NASA’s Kepler space telescope. It is about 5,000 light-years away from us. One of the stars is similar to our sun, but the other is much smaller and less than 1 percent as bright.

In fact, systems with two stars are quite common. “Unlike our sun, many stars are part of multiple-star(多个恒星的) systems. There, two or more stars circle each other,” said a scientist from NASA’s Research Center in the US.

Scientists are more surprised that there could be two planets in the Kepler-47 system because it is very hard for planets to form in such a complex environment.

One of the planets, Kepler-47b, is closer to the stars. It’s three times larger than Earth. The other one, Kepler-47c, is about 4.5 times the size of Earth. Most importantly, Kepler-47c is neither too close nor too far away from the stars. It means the planet won’t be too hot or cold. So scientists believe there could be water on it or even life.

1Which of the ways is NOT mentioned in the passage for people to hide from the sun?

A.Wearing hatsB.Wearing sunglassesC.Buying umbrellasD.Sitting under trees

2According to Paragraph 3 and 4, the two stars in the Kepler-46 system_______.

A.are similar to our sun in sizeB.always move around each other

C.are quite unusual to exist(存在) togetherD.belong to another multiple-star system as well

3What does the word “complex” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.不寻常的B.单一的C.艰难的D.困惑的

4Which is TRUE about the planets in the Kepler-47 system?

A.Kepler-47c is neither too hot nor too cold.

B.Kepler-47c is proved to be suitable for lives.

C.Kepler-47b is 4.5 times as large as the Earth.

D.Kepler-47b is farther away from the stars than Kepler-47c.

5The passage mainly talks about __________.

A.the newly-found Kepler-47 systemB.the stars and planets of multiple-star system

C.the information of different systems in spaceD.the special environment of our solar system
