Baseball is one of the favorite sports in the U.S.A. Children play baseball in sports fields or parks.
At summer picnic, there is often an informal(非正式的) baseball game. Boys and girls, young and old take turns to play. There are nine players on each team.
The baseball season goes from April to September. During this time, baseball matches are showed on TV and members of the important baseball teams become America's heroes(英雄). At the end of the season, the two top teams play against each other. Many baseball fans go along to watch the game. Millions of others listen to the radio or watch television. Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, “You should have goals like climbing the mountain.” Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn’t have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from the mountain-climbing. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience.
Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds’ singing. But as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing, but my father said to me, “You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can’t see it before you reach the top. Only there can you see all of the nice things, which is just like your life.”
At that time, I was too young to understand his words. But later after that, I got to know the meaning of hope in life. I found myself standing at the top of the mountain, and the sky was as clear as crystal.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little outgoing, try the following. You can make it.
Tell people you are shy. Just let people know that you are a shy kid. When they know that, they’ll understand you better. This also helps you feel more at home when talking with others.
Try to smile more. People think you are friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that most of us would like to talk to friendly people and we will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Talk to others first. If you find it hard to do, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to those people?
Turn your attention to somewhere else. Think more about ways to enjoy the party or the game. Don’t worry about your looks or care if people like you.
Reward(奖励) yourself. Each time after you say “hi” or smile at someone for the first time , say to yourself “You did it!” or buy yourself an ice cream.

When my two children were young, we took a trip to Disneyland with their grandma. Although the park is about an hour car ride from our home, we decided to spend the night in a hotel, so we could spend more time in the park. In the evening, the famous Disneyland Parade started. My husband took our daughter and ran to have a look, leaving me with grandma and our son who was in a stroller(婴儿车) .
Because I am short, and grandma is shorter, we couldn't see them, and didn’t know where they were. Grandma decided to find them. I told her not to, because I didn't want to lose her. But she walked off, and was soon lost. I made my way to the exit(出口), because I thought everyone would get there, and they did. Then we waited for the hotel bus ——it  never came. So we called them. They told us that there was something wrong with their bus, and that we have to take a taxi. We finally got back to our hotel.

My interest in Chinese food started many years ago, when I had my first job. I was a young reporter for the Daily Journal in San Francisco. Our office wasn’t far from Chinatown. I usually managed to arrange my time so that I could go there at least two or three times a week for a good meal.
The first time I ever ate Chinese food I loved it. And since then, it just tastes better and better to me. The first thing I noticed was the fresh tastes of the meat and vegetable. When I learned more about the food, I began to understand why it has this special feature.
About 5000 years ago, China lost much of its wood because of over population and poor management of its forest. This loss was very bad for the country, of course, but it turned out to be very good for the food. Wood became very expensive and hard to get, so the Chinese had to learn how to use it better.
In order to use less wood in cooking, they started to cut their meat and vegetables into small pieces before they put them in the hot oil. That way, the food cooked faster and they saved their fuel. The food prepared in this manner kept its fresh flavor(风味)—and it’s this flavor that attracts people to the art of Chinese cooking.
I often wonder if the Chinese appreciated their solution to that ancient energy problem as much as I do now –whenever I eat Chinese food.
