When my son. Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list (清单)and had twenty dollars in his pocket.

I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched lit the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his parents. Finally he came to the checkout counter(交款处)and reached into his pocket for his money. There was a hole (洞)in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.

Then a woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. "You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you," said the woman. "It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now."

Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us. I would like to say "Thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting clothes for the homeless (无家可归的)people in the fire. And I am sure that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on

I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes, I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food, especially my favorite-huoguo. You cannot imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen, I seemed to smell huoguo in the air.

To my surprise, when I went into the room, I did not see any sign of huoguo. Where was it?

With many questions in my head, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl, I got to know that Chinese huoguo is completely different from hotpot. Chinese huoguo is written in two words——hot pot; and hotpot, one word, is a traditional English dish.

Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes. People put it in the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat. It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see it at parties in the UK because it is easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.

Hotpot does not taste bad. However, I still miss huoguo—hot pot, two words!
