On April 1 st, China announced that it would build the Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province. This will be of the same importance as the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Pudong New Area.

The area will cover three counties(县) that sit at the center of the triangular(三角形的) area formed by Bejing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang.

The Xiongan New Area has great potential(潜力) for growth. It has a large space to develop and will expand(扩大) to cover 2,000 square kilometers. The transportation of the area is convenient, with only an hour’s drive to Beijing and Tianjin.

The new area also has a wonderful natural environment. It is home to Baiyangdian, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in North China. With more than 140 lakes, the wetland is known as the “pearl(珍珠)”of the North China Plain.

Our school held many activities last week. We called it Road Safety Week. One of the educational activities was a speech given by a police officer. He shared something about the road safety. Here are some important points about his speech.

Most traffic accidents(事故)shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause(原因)of traffic accidents is speed(速度). Some people drive too fast. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid hitting(避免撞)others. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk(人行道).

It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians(行人), and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.

Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.

The rules of the road are very simple. If we learn them and obey(遵守)them, we should not have accidents any more. There were more other activities in Road Safety Week, hope every student could learn something.

D. obeying the rules of the road may stop you from having accidents

Is it worth taking after-school activities for kids in their daily life? Kids in Australia usually do after-school activities in their free time. The activities usually include part-time jobs, community service, sports training and club activities.

Amy, Rose and May, three teenagers from Marryatville High School, gave us their views.

Yes, but only up to a point. You may join many clubs and take part in different kinds of activities to make sure that your college application will stand out. But don’t stress yourself out. You shouldn’t have over 5 after-school activities in your spare time. What’s more, the activities you choose should show what you really love or you have interest in. ---Amy

Yes, take as many as you like. After-school activities make our life more colorful and make us happier in our daily life. They also help us make many more good friends. In addition, we can learn much from these activities. ---Rose

Yes, but quality(质量) wins over quantity. Nowadays, more and more teenagers are under great pressure. The stress comes from studies, their family and the social life. Taking after-school activities helps them relax themselves. But I think it’s better to have two to three after-school activities that you often join in.
