It was near Christmas during my first semester teaching at a new school.I loved my small special class more than any group I had taught in the past. They were hungry for knowledge and I was enjoying teaching.
Other teachers had told me that our children were from poor families and not to expect any child to bring a Christmas gift.In fact,I wasn't expecting any gifts.
Imagine my surprise when every child brought me a gift on the day before our holiday break.First,I got a muchloved stuffed monkey from a shy girl.I was told,“He is my favorite, but I love you and I want him to be with you,Miss Taylor.”How thrilled I was!
Next came a new set of Christmas tree lights that was “missing” from a mother's cupboard.
Finally,I came to one little boy's gift which I had never received. It was an old, dirty and broken Christmas story book.Just when I wanted to express my happiness,I was interrupted(打断)by the giver,“And see,it is new!It still has the price tag.”
When other children laughed at him,I stopped them and said,“Oh,books are good in that way.The story is always new if you have not read it before. Now,let's share one together.”Everyone listened quietly as I read the most wonderful Christmas story of my life.
I still keep those Christmas gifts. They always remind me of my lovely kids.

I grew up in the 1950s with very practical parents. My mother washed aluminum foil(铝箔纸)after she cooked in it, and then she reused it. She was the earliest recycle(回收)queen before people had a name for it.
My father was no different. He preferred getting old shoes fixed to -buying new ones. Their  marriage was good and their dreams were focused(集中).Their best friends lived just a wave away. Though my parents have passed away, I can see them now - Dad in trousers, a T-shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawnmower(割草机)in one hand and dishtowel in the other.
It was the time to fix things -a curtain rod(挂帘杆),the kitchen radio, the screen door, the oven door, and so on. They fixed all things we had. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing and renewing made me want to scream.1 wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant being rich. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. I often thought like that.
But then my mother died, and on that clear summer night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I learned that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away and it will never return. So, while we have it, it is the best that we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and cure it when it's sick.
This is true for marriage, old cars, children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it and because we are worth it.

Once I spoke at a high school. After the speech, the principal asked me to see a special student. An          had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.
He was Matthew.          he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told            would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal weight lifter.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. He spoke about            and succeeding and seeking(追寻)his dreams.
When we finished talking, I went to my         and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about                     and overcoming obstacles(克服障碍)than I ever would. He looked at it for a while, then took it off and handed it          to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I got the news that Matthew had         and a letter Matthew had written to me a few days before:
Dear Rick,
My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter. The doctors are         to tell me that I don't have long to live any more. But I still smile as much as I can.
I told you that in the future I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I'll         . I know I'm a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you.
Thank you for loving me.
Your friend
Matthew

Barefoot (赤脚的) and dirty, the girl just sat there and watched the people go by. She never tried to speak. She never said a word. Many people        , but never did one person stop.
The next day, I decided to go back to the park, being curious if the little girl would still be there. Right in the very spot as she was the day before, she sat, with the         look on her face.
As I began walking towards her, I could see the back of the little girl’s dress showed a deformity (畸形的). As I got closer, the little girl slightly          her eyes to avoid (避开) my stare.
I sat down beside her and opened with a simple        . The little girl stammered (结结巴巴地说) a hi. I smiled and she shyly smiled back. We talked         darkness fell and the park was completely empty.
“Why are you so sad?”
She replied slowly, “Because I’m        .”
“Little girl,” I said in a soft voice, “You          me of an angel because of your difference.”
She stood to her feet excitedly, “Really?”
“Yes, that’s the thing. You’re like a little angel sent to watch over all those people walking by.”
She nodded her head and smiled, “       I am. And since you think of someone        yourself, my job here is done.”
What a big        ! I stood quickly, “Wait, so why did no one stop to help an angel?”
She bloomed(绽放) a big smile, “You’re the          one who could see me, because you care for others.” With those words, she spread her wings and flied away from my sight.
From then on, I believe I am not all I have, for there is an angel always          me. She is always watching over those who do good things for others.

That day was like any other day in his life. After school Michael walked past the shop in the street corner. He stopped to          some shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He        wanted to have a pair of shoes for his birthday. He walked away sadly and thought of what to tell his mother. He knew she would give him        if she could. But he also knew very well she had          money. He decided not to go home         , as he looked worried and his mother would notice it. So he went to the park and sat down on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair. He noticed that the boy moved the wheels with his hands. Michael looked at him carefully and was            to see that the boy had no feet. He looked         at his own feet. “It is        better to be without shoes than        feet.” he thought. There was no reason for him to         so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was more lucky in his life.
