High-speed railways, Alipay, shared bikes and online payment are seen as the new four great achievements of China by young foreigners, according to a video survey by the Silk Road Research Institute of Beijing Foreign Studies University. In the video, young people from 20 countries along Belt and Road Routes were asked to name great achievements that had influenced their lives in China. The following is what they said from 4 young people of them.

I’m from Romania. China is really a great country and its high-speed railways are very fast, convenient and tidy. It takes me only 6 hours from Beijing to Shanghai by train. It saves a lot of time and it’s cheaper than airplane. I wish we would have high-speed railways in our country someday.

Archana, from New Delhi, India

My life in Beijing is quite different from that in India. Here is China, I seldom take money with me when I go out. I can pay for almost everything by Zhi Fu Bao. Oh, it’s amazing. However, in India, if you don’t take a wallet with you, you will be in a tough spot.

Bond, from Bangkok, Thailand

You can find many wonderful things that we don’t have in Thailand. We don’t have Alipay or other online payment Apps with which I can go shopping without stepping out of the doors. If only I could bring them back to my country.

Alice Munro is the first Canadian citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Munro was born into a farming family in Ontario in 1931. The family was very poor.

Munro did a lot of physical work as a young girl. She started writing stories in her teens and studied journalism and English at the University of Western Ontario. She published in many magazines starting in the 1950s. in 1968, she published Dance of the Happy Shades, a collection of short stories. In 1971, she published a collection of stories Lives of Girls and Women, and in many of the stories she talks about her poor relationship with her mother.

Since her first book in 1968, Munro has won many awards, including the 2009 Man Booker International Prize, with the 2013 Nobel Prize as her biggest honor. But Munro doesn’t see herself as a talented writer.

“I have many notebooks that include this terrible clumsy(笨拙的) writing. I often wonder, when I look at these first drafts(草稿), if it was meaningful to do this at all. I’m the opposite of a writer with quick gift.”

“Alice Munro is mostly known as a short story writer and yet she brings as much depth, wisdom and precision(精确) to every story as most novelists bring to a lifetime of novels.” The Man Booker judging committee said.

Munro became world-famous for writing about everyday people. “Here we have a world prize being won by someone who writes about housewives in Vancouver(温哥华), booksellers in Victoria, bean farmers in Huron Country and accountants and teachers and librarians— common Canadian people, and she turns it into magic,” said Doug Gibson, Munro’s publisher.

“After many years, many collections and many wonderful stories, readers may feel they know everything about Alice Munro, especially as so many of her characters live lives similar to her own. In fact, we know very little about her. This is one of the reasons readers are crazy about Munro. This other reason is that she is so good.” said Anne Enright from Guardian.
