A man was selling medicine at a fair(集市). At first he sold bottles of a cure(药剂)for colds for just a dollar a bottle.
Many people wanted to buy it and the man's young assistant moved quickly through the crowd(人群)collecting money and handing out bottles of cure. Then when he had a big crowd, the man held up a very small bottle, “And now, ladies and gentlemen,”he shouted.“Here is the medicine you have been waiting for. The cure for old age. Drink just one bottle of this and you will live forever(永远).”
“And ladies and gentlemen,” the man continued(继续).“I am not going to charge(向……要价)you a hundred dollars a bottle for this wonderful medicine. I am not going to charge you fifty dollars a bottle. I am not going to charge twenty-five dollars a bottle. Now, ladies and gentlemen, I am going to charge you just ten dollars and you can live forever.”
Most of the people in the crowd did not believe this. One person shouted, “If it can make you live forever, why don't you drink it?” Then another man cried, “Yes, you look as if you are at least sixty years old.” “Thank you, sir, thank you,” the man answered. “I am so glad you said that. My real age is three hundred and twenty-nine.”
The crowd laughed at this but there were still some people who wanted to believe the man. One of them spoke to the man's assistant as she passed by. “Is that true?” he asked. “Is he three hundred and twenty-nine?”
“Don't ask me,” the assistant said. “I have only worked for him for a hundred and fifty years.”

Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, “If anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea.”
“OK, Dad,” said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, “Where is your father?” The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it. He suddenly remembered he had burnt it, so he shouted, “No more.”
The man was very surprised. He asked, “No more? I met your father last week. When did it happen?”
"Burnt yesterday evening."
