I’m crazy about chocolate, so it’s no surprise that my favorite book is Charlie

and the Chocolate Factory by the wonderful Roald Dahl. Forget Charlie Bucket,

the real hero is Willy Wonka, inventor of the most amazing sweets in the world.

Here are just afew of his delicious creations :

•Hot ice cream for a cold day! What a great idea. Now I can eat ice cream

every day! He also invented an ice cream that never melts (融化)—very useful.

•Wallpaper that you can lick. This wallpaper comes in orange, grape, apple

and banana flavours. When you lick the pictures, you taste the fruit. Brilliant!

•Grass made of sugar called Swudge. It grows by the chocolate river and the

chocolate waterfall in Willy Wonka’s factory.

•Mr. Wonka also invented some special sweets for schoolchildren, such as a

kind of chocolate others cannot see when you are eating it. There are also sugar-

coated pencils and magic hand-fudge (软糖)—you hold the fudge in your hand

and you taste it in your mouth. Finally, there are Wonka’s exploding

weets — a great way of scaring (恐吓)the school bully!

Anyway, these are just a few of his inventions. Read the book

A lift is very useful. It looks like a small room. It goes up and down all day. Sometimes a worker stands in the lift. He or she operates(操作) it up and down. In modern lifts there's no worker. People walk in. They know what floor they want to go. They push a button(按钮)and the lift goes to that floor. It's very fast and easy.

Lifts are very important to us. Why? Think about a tall building. Maybe it has twenty floors. Maybe it has fifty or more. Who can walk up all the stairs(楼梯)?Maybe people can climb them once. Can someone climb thirty floors to an office every day? Can small children walk up to their rooms on the twenty-four floor? Can their mothers or fathers carry food up to all those stairs? Of course not. We can have very high buildings because we have lifts. We could not have all the beautiful tall buildings without lifts. I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.

After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price. So we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.

I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I walked out of the motel with a flashlight (电筒). I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. 1 had to look for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. When I took another look into the last bin, I saw my bag right on its top! I was never so happy to see such a dirty old bag in my life!
