The day is like any other day in his life. Tom walks past the shop at the street corner. He stops to look at the front row of shoes, and he feels happy to see that pair of shoes he wants very much is still there. But he feels sorry for himself. He really wants to have the shoes for his birthday.

He sadly walks away and thinks how to tell his mother about it. He knows she will buy anything (任何东西) he likes if she can. He also knows very well that she has little money. He decides not to go home so quickly, because he looks worried (焦虑的) and his mother will see it. So he goes to the park and sits on the grass. Then he sees a boy in a wheelchair (轮椅). He notices that the boy moves the wheelchair with his hands. Tom looks at him carefully and is surprised to see the boy has no feet. Millions of people across China will crowd onto trains and buses next February, hurrying home to be with their families for the country’s most important holidays, Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival. February 4th, 2019 marks the end of the Year of the Dog.

History of the Holiday

According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖)asked all the animals to meet him on Lunar New Year. Twelve animals came, and Buddha named a year after each one.

The Year of Good Luck

Buddha announced that people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. If you were born in 1970, 1982, 1994 or 2006, you were born in the year of the Dog. In ancient times, the dog is considered the best symbol for honesty and loyalty(忠诚). People who were born in these years are believed to be honest, brave and filled with good luck and strength. They are said to get along best with people born in the year of the Tiger, Rat or Horse.

Festivals, Lions and Feasts(筵席)

On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks and family gatherings. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with the lion dance. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions perform. The dancers are supposed to bring good luck to people. People often wear red. Legend has it that red can drive away bad luck.

The 15-day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and family. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lamps are hung in parks around China.

Last week, my father and I went fishing. He handed me the rod ( 鱼 竿 ), held my arms and taught me how to throw my line into the water. The sun warmed us. We sat and talked. “I remember when I could sit here and watch the fish swimming in the water,” he said. “Sometimes, they’d jump out and land beside me. I didn’t even need a fishing rod then. “We have to be patient,” he continued. “The fish may come or they may not. It doesn’t matter. We’re out in the sun. It’s a beautiful day. If it rained, we couldn’t be here. We’re lucky to have the warmth of the sun.”

He sat under a tree. “Yes, it’s a great day,” he said. I watched our bobbers ( 浮 子 ). No fish pulled them under the water that day. It didn’t matter. I was with my father. I felt grown up. Just being with him was special.

He was well liked by everyone. He had worked hard all his life for what little he had, but he could still find time to laugh. I wanted to be like him when I grew up. He was an amazing man. In the short time we had been together, he taught me many things: how to fish, the value of a good laugh, the value of a good friend, respect for my elders and the importance of working hard and loving harder. The list is long.
