My parents quarreled a lot, and I was really worried about it. I didn’t know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to allow me to stay the night at my best friend’s house. Though I knew I wouldn’t tell her about my parents’ situation, I was looking forward to getting out of the house. I was packing up my things when suddenly the power (电) went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the power came back on.
I was really disappointed(失望的) because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that I’d stay with him until the power was restored(恢复). He was quite happy and said.
“Great chance.”
“What is?” I asked.
“To talk, you and I,” he said. “To hold a one-to-one little meeting about what we’re going to do with your mom and dad, and what we’re going to do with ourselves and the situation we are in now.”
“But we can’t do anything about it, Grandpa,” I said, surprised that here was someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same “boat” as I was.
And that is how the most amazing friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting there in the dark, we talked about our feelings and fears of life from how fast things change to how they sometimes don’t change fast enough. That night, because the power went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could safely talk about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be.

Then, I felt hopeless, and pressed all the buttons with my open hands. And all at the same time, there was a bell far away. It rang and rang. It was the fire alarm(火灾警报). I thought the whole building was on fire. I said to the God quietly, “ Just get me out of here. I’ll never be bad again.”
Just then, I realized the lift was moving very slowly. On the ground floor it stopped, and the door opened. A man was standing there. “ How long have you been there? It is good that you pressed the alarm bell. But haven’t you learned to read at your school ?” He pointed at a small piece of paper on the wall beside the lift. As I was passing the elephants, I was confused to see these huge animals were held by nothing but a small rope. The rope was tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages. It was        that the elephants could easily break away from the ropes at any time. But the fact was opposite.
I saw a        nearby and asked why these elephants just stood there and made no attempt (尝试) to       . “Well,” he said, “when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same        rope to tie them. At that age, it was enough to hold them. As they       , they are used to believing that they cannot break away. They believe the rope can        hold them, so they never try to break free.”
To my       , these animals could break free from their ropes at any time, but they       . Because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go        life believing that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? How many of us have        trying something new because of a limited belief (认知)? Worse, how many of us are being held back by someone else’s limited beliefs?

In the UK a trip to Lazerquest is a popular way to celebrate a birthday. It's a game where you shoot your friends with toy guns. Kids hide in dark corners and hope to surprise them.
Other people go bowling (打保龄球) and then have dinner at a nice restaurant. If it's your birthday you can choose whatever you want to eat and drink.
Going to an amusement park for your birthday is popular too. Amusement parks have big rides like roller coasters and ghost (鬼怪) trains. Parents often pay for their kids to bring some friends with them on these big days out.
If the weather is nice and you have enough space, you can have a garden party. People play games like blind man's bluff. One kid cannot see but has to try and catch the others by listening out for them. There's music at the party and sometimes a barbecue (烧烤野餐).
