There are two McDonalds-Mac and Dick-and they are brothers. They like working in their restaurant(饭店), but they get tired of the customers(顾客) ordering so many different things to eat.

“If we give customers a smaller menu(菜单), we can make some of the food before they come, and they needn't wait so long for their meals.” says one of the brothers. The other brother says “yes”. He says, “If we can make the customers come to the counter(柜台), we don't need any waiters or waitresses. We can also use plastic(塑料的) plates.”

McDonald brothers begin to use these good ideas, and the customers are very pleased. They get their meals very quickly-in less than(不到) a minute-and they pay only 15 cents(分) for hamburgers and 10 cents for fries. The first McDonald's restaurant had no seats for customers to sit on. People take their food away and no one has to clean up any tables after them.

Then a man called Ray Kroc comes to the brothers and asks to buy their business. They agree to sell it to him for $27 million(百万). After that, people pay Ray Kroc to open their own restaurants using the McDonald's name. Before long(不久以后), there are McDonald's restaurants all over the USA, and now, they are all over the world-even in China. The most successful(成功的) McDonald's business is in HK, China.

In 1955, Ray Kroc visited a small restaurant in California(加利弗尼亚). The restaurant was built next to the road, so customers could drive up to the restaurant and drive away easily. The restaurant was owned and operated by the MacDonald brothers, Dick and ‘Mac’.

The McDonald brothers had developed a new idea for their restaurant. The brothers called their idea a “drive-in” restaurant, and customers could order food from their cars.

The restaurant also cut down on the number of choices on the menu, so the cooks could make the food very quickly. The restaurant was good at making hamburgers, French fries, and chocolate shakes.

Ray Kroc recognized the potential(潜力) of the McDonald brothers’ restaurant, and he offered to buy the rights to the two brothers’ idea. Mr. Kroc wanted to open his own restaurants, and he wanted to use the idea of a drive-in restaurant. He also wanted to use the brothers’ family name. The two brothers agreed, and the McDonald’s restaurant chain was born.

McDonald’s is now the world’s largest restaurant corporation(公司). In the United States, there are more than 5,000 McDonald’s restaurants. The McDonald’s chain also operates restaurants in 60 other countries. In 1992, McDonald made more than $16 billion from its restaurants around the world.

The largest McDonald’s restaurant is located in Beijing, China. It has 1,000 employees(雇员). Also, up to 700 customers can sit and eat in this restaurant at one time.
