The Windy Day

Book report By Jason Ma

Title(标题): The Windy Day

Writer: Alisha Wood

The reason for my choice:

The idea of a recent popular film comes from Alisha Wood’s stories. The story interests me.

Summary of the book:

It is about what happens to a little boy called Daniel on a windy day. One day, Daniel is flying his kite on Peace Hill. Suddenly, a strong wind blows up the hill and lifts Daniel right off his feet. Daniel holds on to his kite tightly(紧紧地) and is blown into the clouds. Finally, he lands in a small town with a sign, “Nowhere: The Town Nobody’s Ever Heard Of”. This worries Daniel.

He asks people around where Nowhere is. But all of them say, “Nowhere. Nobody knows.” He tries hard to find out the way home but he cannot. It is like an adventure(冒险) until(直到……为止) he meets the King. Daniel talks to him and he decides to help Daniel. He claps his hands twice. A great wind comes up and pulls the kite, along with Daniel, into the clouds and back to Peace Hill.

On April 1 st, China announced that it would build the Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province. This will be of the same importance as the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Pudong New Area.

The area will cover three counties(县) that sit at the center of the triangular(三角形的) area formed by Bejing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang.

The Xiongan New Area has great potential(潜力) for growth. It has a large space to develop and will expand(扩大) to cover 2,000 square kilometers. The transportation of the area is convenient, with only an hour’s drive to Beijing and Tianjin.

The new area also has a wonderful natural environment. It is home to Baiyangdian, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in North China. With more than 140 lakes, the wetland is known as the “pearl(珍珠)”of the North China Plain.

Onece built, the area will lower the heavy burden(负担) on Beijing. For example, many companies, universities and scientific research centers will move from Beijing to the area.

International experts and media also think highly of this new area, saying that it will set an example to developing countries.

Our school held many activities last week. We called it Road Safety Week. One of the educational activities was a speech given by a police officer. He shared something about the road safety. Here are some important points about his speech.

Most traffic accidents(事故)shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause(原因)of traffic accidents is speed(速度). Some people drive too fast. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid hitting(避免撞)others. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk(人行道).

It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians(行人), and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.

Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.

The rules of the road are very simple. If we learn them and obey(遵守)them, we should not have accidents any more. There were more other activities in Road Safety Week, hope every student could learn something.

B. Making sure there aren’t any cars coming.

C. Showing with your right hand to tell that you want to turn right.

D. Changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users.

4.From the police officer’s speech, we can learn the following except that(除了) ________.

A. riding bikes is the most dangerous

B. it’s not only drivers who cause traffic accidents

D. obeying the rules of the road may stop you from having accidents

5.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
