Your friends might be in England or may be just next-door neighbors, but they are all just a few clicks away. Life has changed a lot for millions of young people who like to make friends online around the world. Whether you use the chat room, QQ or MSN, you are in this group.

"I don't often talk with my parents or grandparents, but I talk a lot with my friends on QQ," said Tears in Hand, an online name used by a girl student in China.

QQ is the biggest messaging service in China. A report from the company which developed QQ says that 4 million people used it one Saturday night in October. And probably Tears in Hand was one of them. "I log in on Friday nights, Saturdays or Sundays, when I feel bored. I usually spend about ten hours chatting online every week," she said. "But I never talk with strangers, especially boys or men." Even though she likes chatting, she is careful about making friends with strangers online because she knows that she shouldn't believe in the strangers online easily.

Many people like to meet online friends when they feel they have got to know someone very well. Tears in Hand once met one online friend face to face and they went to a football match together.

A boy named Blue Sky dislikes QQ users, "I used to chat on QQ, but I found most people are talking about foolish things. Now I only chat in English on MSN with my Japanese or American friends because I want to learn more about foreign cultures." So he spends very little time chatting on QQ and he thinks it's a waste of time and money. He said, "If you are addicted to it, you can't concentrate on your lessons. We should know that friends in our real life are more important than those online ones.

As I was finishing seventh grade, my school decided to make some changes because of financial(财政的)problems. The school would make the classes bigger, so there could be fewer teachers.①We needed to write down the names of people we wanted to be with and didn't want to be with. I wrote down the names of all my close friends.

I found out that none of my close friends were in any of my new classes. Also, my new classmates were quite different from my old ones. I thought they weren't as smart as my old classmates. They were also not in the school activities I was in. I couldn't find common interests with them.

As the year went on, I began to feel lonely and envy people in other groups. Why could they be with all their friends? As I found out, they didn't have many friends at first. They had made new friends in their new classes. They seemed pretty happy with their new friends.

I decided it was time for me to make new friends. I noticed that the people with many friends were very active. ②They often talked to others first, while I was too scared to talk to others and hoped other people would talk to me first.

If you arrange(排列)the 26 English letters in

order and use numbers to represent each of them, for

example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c. . . 26 for z, you can

change an English word into a number. So hard work

becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98,meaning 98

is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5

=96;love:12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47,

a small mark. None of these words can give one a full

mark. What about money? It can't, either.
