My version(视力)is getting worse.I can’t even see what is five feet away from me without glasses.我拒绝戴眼镜,though I know I need to.I’m afraid they will make me look ugly.Besides, I can do well without them. These were my thoughts two years ago, when I was in the sixth grade. An embarrassing experience taught me that what I was thinking was wrong.

②School has been out for two months.I was going to junior high school soon, where I was sure that looks are everything. So the question still remained there.Should I, Or should I not, wear glasses? The question was still in my mind when my family and I attended a wedding(婚礼)late in the summer.

During the wedding, I drank too much juice.Soon after it ended, I walked quickly to the bathroom.Since it was an emergency(紧急)and I couldn’t clearly see which door was ③marked boys.I just opened the nearest door and entered the restroom.

Unluckily, I had entered the wrong restroom. But I didn’t know this until I heard a scream(尖叫声)coming from the entrance when I was washing my hands.

After that, I decided to wear the ugly-looking glasses.I didn’t really ④care about what people thought of me any more, because I never wanted to enter the wrong bathroom again.

On the first day of seventh grade, ⑤my friends didn’t make fun of me.Instead they gave me compliments. They thought the glasses made me look more cute and more natural.

(One day Alice runs after a strange rabbit and comes into a deep hole. She becomes smaller when she wakes up the next day. She finds herself in a wonderland with many amazing things inside.)

The Caterpillar(毛毛虫) and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence. At last the Caterpillar took the pipe out of its mouth, and said to her in a tired, sleepy voice.

“Who are YOU?” said the Caterpillar.

This opening for a talk couldn’t make Alice at ease. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I----I hardly know, sir, just at present ----at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”

“What do you mean by that?” said the Caterpillar, “Explain yourself!”

“I can’t explain MYSELF. I’m afraid, sir.” said Alice, “because I’m not myself, you see.”

“I don’t see.” said the Caterpillar.

“I’m afraid I can’t put it more clearly.” Alice replied very politely, “for I can’t understand it myself. And being so many different sizes in a day is very puzzling.”

“It isn’t.” said the Caterpillar.

“Well, perhaps you haven’t found it so yet.” said Alice. “But when you have to turn into a chrysalis(蛹,茧)----you will some day, you know ----and then after that into a butterfly, I think you’ll feel it a little stranger, won’t you?”

“Not a bit.” said the Caterpillar.

“Well, perhaps your feelings may be different.” said Alice. “All I know is, it would make ME feel very strange.”

“You!” said the Caterpillar scornfully(鄙视地). “Who are YOU?” The question brought them back again to the beginning of the talk. Alice felt a little angry because the Caterpillar was making such VERY short sentences. She drew herself up and said very seriously, “I think you ought to tell me who YOU are first.”

“Why?” said the Caterpillar.

Here was another puzzling question. As Alice could not think out any good reason, and as the Caterpillar seemed to be very unpleasant, she turned away.

“Come back!” the Caterpillar called after her. “I’ve something important to tell you!”

This certainly gave Alice some hope. Alice turned and came back again.

There was a time when I thought my dad didn’t know how to be a good father. Some parents bought their kids cars when they got their driver’s licenses. Not my dad — he said that I’d have to get a job and buy my own.
So that is what I did. I got a job at a very nice restaurant and4every penny I could and when I had enough to buy my car, I did! The day I brought that car home, my dad was the first one I wanted to5it off to. “Look, dad, a car of my own. If you ever want a ride, you only need to pay me five dollars.” I offered with a smile.
“I see,” was all he said.
One day, there was something wrong with my father’s truck. So he needed a6to work. The sun wasn’t even up when we left the house,7it was already getting warm out. It was going to be a hotday. My father is a cement finisher(水泥修整工).
Suddenly, it came up with me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete(混凝土) to make a living for his family. And he did this day in and day out,11hot it got. Never, not once, had I heard him12about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he ask us to pay for it.
When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to13me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s my14. Don’t work too hard. I love you.”
His eyesmet mine, then glanced away in the direction of his waiting tools, he15his throat(喉咙) and said, “Oh, and… me, too.”
