Could you live without a computer or a mobile phone? It might be hard for you to imagine a life without technology(科技). But even today, many people all over the world live happily without it. There are many tribes(部落) with much more important things to worry about than technology.

One of the most famous tribes on the earth is the Maasai(马赛族) people of Kenya, in Africa. The Maasai people don’t live in one place all the time. They move from place to place and make new homes each time they move. They build their homes in the forests from things they can find in nature—mud, sticks, grass and rocks. Their villages don’t have electricity(电), so computers and mobile phones cannot be used.

Another tribe in South East Asia is the Hmong. These are hill people—they live in the mountains in parts of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. They have a very traditional way of life. In fact, they live the same way now that their ancestors(祖先) used to live over 2,000 years ago. They’ve also got their own ancient language with two different dialects(方言): Hmong Djua and Hmong Daw. The language comes from Southern China and it’s quite different from the other languages of South East Asia. You won’t find much technology in a Hmong hill village.

The Koryak people, a tribe in Russia, live on the northern part of them Pacific Coast. It is very cold. For food, these people catch fish or keep reindeer (驯鹿). Koryak children help hunt(狩猎) and cook food for their family. They also sometimes make their own clothes with reindeer skin(皮).

Life for these people is much harder than it is for you or me. Could you live comfortably without basic necessities like food, water and electricity?

A baboon

Big animals usually come into cities to find food. In Cape Town in South Africa, baboons come into cities when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees. They even go into houses and take food from fridges! The city can be dangerous for baboons. Sometimes, cars and buses kill them. Our food is bad for their teeth because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are Baboon Monitors working in Cape Town. Their job is to find baboons in the city and return them to the countryside.

In Berlin in Germany, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers, vegetables and plants in parks and gardens. Sometimes they walk in the street. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water. Other people do not like the pigs and they want the police to stop them coming into the city.

In Moscow (莫斯科) in Russia, there are 35,000 wild dogs. The dogs live in parks, old houses, markets and train stations. Many people in Moscow like the dogs. They give them food and water. Some people make small houses for the dogs in their gardens and this helps the dogs in winter.

The Faces of Christmas

“ Oh, Sally! Christmas is going to be so terrible this year,” my best friend Laura said to me on the school bus. “ Mom and Dad have to be out of town on Christmas, and I have to stay with my Aunt Jane. She always treats (对待) me like a five-year-old! I wish I had a ______ family like you, so I could go somewhere else.”

I do have a big family: Mom, Dad, Mary, Jim and I, as well as lots of aunts and uncles. Every Christmas, the whole family get together at our house to have dinner.

Later that day, I told Mom about Laura’s ______ .

“ Why don’t you ask Laura to spend Christmas at our house? ” Mom offered.

“ Oh, Mom, that would be great! I’m sure Laura would love to come.” I was so excited.

“ There will be an extra (额外的) place at the table anyway, because Mary has a chance to go to France with her teachers.” Mom went on while washing dishes.

“No! Mom, she can’t go, or she’ll ______ Christmas with the family. We’ve always spent it together…” When I wanted to say more, the telephone rang. It was my brother Jim calling. He asked if Mom and Dad wouldn’t ______ too much if he didn’t come home for Christmas, because he wanted to go skating with friends. Of course, Mom and Dad said Jim could go, but I had wanted them to say no.

On the afternoon of Christmas Eve, Laura came over, which cheered me up a lot.

“Where are Mary and Jim?” she asked me.

“They’ve made other ______ , so they aren’t coming home,” I said. “Christmas just isn’t going to be the same this year ______ them.”

“Of course,” Mom went over and said. “No two Christmases are ever the same. People ______ —children grow older, new members are added (添加) to the family, and sometimes people die. Do you understand that, Sally?”

“ Yes, Mom,” I said. “ I think I do.”

Next evening, all my relatives (亲戚) arrived. As I looked around the dinner table, I really began to ______ what Mom had tried to tell me.
