题目内容

Dear editor,
I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city every year because there are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀) here.
The peacocks mostly live on the grassland of Dongfeng Square. Visitors usually throw food to them, but they don’t think about at all whether the food is good or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, and some even died eating the bad food given by visitors.
I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the bird, but they don’t realize that they may be doing them harm (伤害). Visitors should be told that what they have done is harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped.
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it is our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds to look after them carefully.
Yours,
Wang Yang

He came again the next day and worked until it was time to leave. His name was Jerry. He was 12 and had been at the Children’s Home(孤儿院)since he was only four.  I thought of him. He was honest(诚实). For example, the handle (柄) of the ax (斧)broke one day. Jerry said the Children’s Home would mend it. I handed him some money to pay for it. He wouldn’t take the money. "I’ll pay for it, mama. I broke it. I didn’t hit the wood in the right place. "
"But Jerry, no one hits the wood in the right place all the time. And it was a weak handle. I’ll speak to the seller. " It was only then that he would take the money.
Another thing about Jerry was that he would do those little but helpful things. The things would not be badly needed but would make life so much easier. For example, he found a hole near the fireplace. "I’ll put some wood in the hole, mama. Then when a sudden storm(暴风雨)comes up, you can stay warm. "
One cold day, Jerry sat close by me near the fire. We watched the fire bum. He suddenly talked of something he had never talked of before. "You look like my mother, especially(特别) next to the fire"

A Trip to the Forest

If you think you’re too shy and want to be a little bit brave, try the following:
You can make it. Tell people you’re shy. There’s no need to hide it. When they get to know you’re a shy kid, they’ll understand you better. This also helps you feel more relaxed in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you’re friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that other people have feelings too and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start talks, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Get your attention elsewhere(在别处). Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi” or smile at someone, say to yourself “You did it”. Keep trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you talk about yourself.

Top student Liu Weijian had a problem recently. The 14-year-old from Xiamen used to get marks of over 110 points (out of 120 points) on his math tests. But during last semester’s final exams, his math score was only 90 points.
“I didn’t know what happened,” said Liu, who kept feeling nervous and frustrated about math during the following month.
Like Liu, many of us experience setbacks (挫折) in life. ②你会怎样应对这些挫折呢? Would you just let them be and give up?
Liu chose to face his problem. His parents and teacher also gave him help. After some hard work, he now gets marks between 100 and 110 points on his math tests. “Don’t be afraid of setbacks,” he said. “You will beat them.”
Guo Xingjuan in Shenzhen also has a story to tell. The 15-year-old girl is not good at doing sit-ups (仰卧起坐), ③which is necessary for the coming high school P.E. entrance test (体育中考). One has to do at least 35 sit-ups in a minute to pass the test. However, she could only do 20.
Feeling worried, Guo decided to do something. She did sit-ups for half an hour every day after school. Now, after a month, she can do 30 sit-ups a minute. “I finally found what made me slow through practice, and then I improved the skill little by little,” said Guo. “I believe next month I will be able to do 40!”

Do you know how to keep fish at home?
The fish need room. They must not be crowded(拥挤). Fish need oxygen(氧气). Fish get it from water in the tank. There must be enough water for all fish in the tank. So the size of the tank is important..
In the tank many people put small plants(植物). They give oxygen to the water. Plants help in other ways, too. Fish can nibble(轻咬)on the plants. They hide in the plants and sleep, lay eggs there.
Both the plants and fish need light. You can put near a window. It will get light there. But remember: a window may let cold air in. The cold can kill(杀死) your fish. Too hot water can kill your fish, too.
The fish need food and you should feed them every day. Giving them too much food is bad. It will make the water dirty. However, the fish should get just enough food. They should finish the food in 10 minutes. No extra(多余) is left. When this happens, the amount(数量)of food is right.
