If you put a buzzard in a pen six to eight feet square and open at the top, the bird will be a prisoner, though it can fly. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as its habit, it will not even try to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in its small prison with no top.

The bat that flies around at night cannot take off from the ground. If it is placed on the ground, all it can do is to walk slowly about helplessly and no doubt, painfully. If it reaches a higher place, it will be able to throw itself into the air. Then it takes off immediately. But on flat(平的) ground, it will never fly.

A bee dropped into a cup will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but keeps trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will look for a way where none exists(存在), until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bee. They are struggling about with all their problems and difficulties, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

5.What can we learn from the story?

C.We should try new ways to deal with difficulties.

D.We should solve problems by ourselves.

One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy about two years old. He was running freely on the grass as his mother watched near him. The boy had a big smile on his face. The boy then fell to the grass, got up without looking back at his mother and ran as fast as possible. It seemed that nothing had happened to him.

At that moment, I thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults (成年人) this way?” When most adults fall, they would be so embarrassed (尴尬的) that they would not make a second attempt if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good reason for themselves that they’re not fit for it. They would give up trying again for fear of failure.

However, when kids fall, they don’t regard (认为) their falling down as a failure. Instead, they regard it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected (联系) “falling down” with the word “failure”. What’s more, they may think to themselves that it’s quite normal to fall down and that it’s right to do so. In other words, they are not frightened of making mistakes, so they stay active.

I was deeply moved by the boy’s persistence (坚持不懈).

A.He cried and lay on the grass B.He asked his mother for help

C.He got up and went on running D.He got up and stood there crying

2.In the writer’s opinion (观点), what might the little boy treat his falling as?

A.A failure. B.A joke.

C.An interesting game. D.A learning experience.

3.According to the writer, why can’t many adults succeed?

A.Because they are afraid of being embarrassed

B.Because they can’t find a good reason for themselves

C.Because once they fail, they won’t try again

D.Because they are not afraid to make mistakes

4.The underlined word “attempt” in Paragraph 2 means________.

A.尝试 B.放弃 C.面对 D.怀疑

5.What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Practice makes perfect. B.Failure is the mother of success.

C.One tree can’t make a forest. D.Each coin has two sides.
