How do most students spend their free time? Do they have time to do things they like? Let’s see what some students do during their free time.

Ben is eleven. He has a sister, Kate. Both of them like going to the cinema. Every Sunday morning, they go to the town by train and then they go to the cinema because they live in the country (乡下) and there is no cinema there. They arrive in the town at noon. They usually have a big dinner in their favourite restaurant first, and then buy some food in the supermarket before they go to their favourite cinema called the Star Cinema. They like it because the seats there are the most comfortable and the films shown in the cinema are always the newest. They always have a good time on Sundays but when the weather is bad or they are busy with their homework, they can’t go.

What will you do if a doctor tells you that you have a serious illness and just have a few years to live? Will you give up all your hopes and wait to die? All those were the difficulties Stephen Hawking faced in 1963.

Stephen Hawking, one of the most famous scientists in the world, was born in 1942 in Oxford, England. He began his university education at University College, Oxford in 1959 at the age of seventeen. In 1963 he was diagnosed(诊断) with ALS(肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化症), and told that he might only have two more years to live. With the sudden realization that he might not even live long enough, Hawking poured himself into hard work day and night. “I felt it was very unfair—why should this happen to me,” he wrote in his 2013 book, “At the time, I thought my life was over. But now, 50 years later,I am pretty thankful for what I get in my life.” The illness left Hawking in a wheelchair and unable to speak. He had to depend on technology(技术). Luckily, a computer programmer developed a speaking program, which allowed Hawking to choose words on a computer screen. And then these words were passed through a speech synthesizer(合成器). With the help of this program, Stephen Hawking could continue to work. Over the years, he wrote fifteen books, such as A Brief History of Time, The Universe in a Nutshell and The Grand Design.

On March 14, 2018, Hawking died at his home peacefully in Cambridge, England. The news touched people around the world. We have lost a great mind and a wonderful spirit, but his work will live on forever. As he once said, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”
