题目内容

【题目】In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining (请客) at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for coffee and conversation.

Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home:

Would you like to come over for dinner on Saturday night?

“Hey, we're having a party on Friday. Can you come ?

To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept(接受), or say you're sorry and give an excuse(借口):

“Thanks, I'd love to. What time would you like me to come?” or Oh, sorry. I've tickets for a movie.” Sometimes, however, people use expressions(措辞)that sound like invitations, but which are not real invitations(邀请). For example:

Please come over for a drink sometime?

Why not get together for a party sometime?

“Why don't you come over and see us sometime soon?”

They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don't tell time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to expressions like these, people just say: “Sure, that would be nice!” or “OK. Yes, thanks.” So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?

【题目】 Imagine the situation. You are driving along in a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(装置) which uses satellites to find the user’s position. It can find your position to within 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System(全球定位系统), is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in you pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. the second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.GPS

However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
