Mr. Smith’s umbrella was stolen(被偷)when he left it at the gate of the City Church. As his aunt gave him the umbrella as a birthday present, he wanted very much to get it back. So he decided to advertise(登广告)in the newspaper. He hoped he would get it back in this way. Three days passed but no one returned it.

When his friend learned this, he asked Mr. Smith to advertise again like this. “If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday morning does not wish to get into trouble, he must return the umbrella to No.108,Broad Street.”

This came out in the newspaper, and on the next morning Mr. Smith was very much surprised when he opened the front door. By the door lay twelve umbrellas of all colors, and among them was his umbrella. Many of the umbrellas had notes with them saying that he took the umbrella by mistake and asking the owner not to say anything about the matter.

Mr Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "if anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea."
