Several years ago, when I was teaching at a middle school, a girl sent me a message. She found someone write a very ________ message on her locker. She made a picture of it and then sent it to me asking for ________.

A few hours later, I noticed that on her Instagram, she had posted that picture and asked if anyone ________ who did that.

Well, the following day, the girl came to me with a boy. She showed me a ________ she had received. It was a heartfelt apology(道歉). I asked her if she knew who had done it, and the boy replied embarrassedly(尴尬地), “It was me. I don’t know why I did it, but I know it was ________. So I wrote her this note. I ________ wanted to do something to try to make up for my meanness.”

My heart felt so full of _________ for this boy. I told him how _________ he was to come forward and how amazing it was that he did something ________ to correct his mistake. I ________ the girl and asked her if she could ________ him. Without hesitation(犹豫), she said, “Yes.”

I think middle school students are not little children any more, and not grown-ups yet. It is normal that they make mistakes because of their ________. But these two students both showed me that coming forward when she was ________ was important, and coming forward to admit his mistake was also important. They both showed bravery and kindness in a special way I would not have expected. Every day I ________ myself that although I am an educator, my students truly _________ me.

The Unexplained Mystery of Pyramid

The Pyramids in Egypt are really something special. We still don’t really know how the Egyptians built the largest pyramid at all, known as the Great Pyramid of Cheops (or Khufu), some 5,000 years ago. Remember, this was even before the invention of the wheel.

The most famous pyramids are the Egyptian pyramids — huge structures built of brick or stone, some of which are among the world’s largest constructions. The age of the pyramids reached its top at Giza in 2575-2150 B.C. In 2008, some 138 pyramids have been discovered in Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest in Egypt and one of the largest in the world. Until Lincoln Cathedral in England was finished in AD 1311, it was the tallest building in the world. The base is over 52,600 square meters in area. While pyramids are associated(关联的) with Egypt, the nation of Sudan has 220 extant pyramids, the most numerous in the world.

In the 1940s, a radio engineer named Karel Drbal claimed(声称) that small pyramids of a 1:1,000 scale as the Great Pyramid could sharpen knives. His explanation was that the pyramid shape focuses energy when precisely aligned (精确对齐) on the north-south axis (轴), which can renew steel.

Though the claims of Drbal and others, there is no scientific evidence that Pyramids have power. It is a cut and dry myth, probably driven by the nature of pyramids and their ancient, unexplained mysteries.

As the neurologist (神经学家) Terence Hines wrote: “People became quite crazy about Pyramid Power in the world of pseudoscience for a time in the mid-1970s. Actually, the idea was that the pyramidal shape itself was magical and filled with a mysterious energy and power.”

Not long ago, I answered a telephone call from an old friend who I’d not heard from for a long time. “Hi, my good friend,” said the voice on the end. “I just wanted to see how you’re getting long.”

At the end of the conversation, he said, “if you need me in any way, I’ll be happy to help out.” And he meant it! That call came at just the right time. I needed those words of encouragement (鼓励). I hung up the phone and felt very warm in my heart.

And that day I relearned something important about life: Life is first about people, not to-do lists and a million tasks left undone—it’s about people.

To love and to know that we are loved is the greatest happiness. And happiness seems to be something that too many of us are short of (缺少)! My friend reminded (提醒) me that it is never enough just to love; we must also express (表达) it.

George William Childs put it like this: “Do not keep the box of your love and friendship closed up until your friends are gone. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be made happier.” Happiness may be just a phone call.
