A beautiful and very successful actress was the star of a new musical show. Her home was in the country, but she didn’t want to have to go back there every night. So she rented an expensive flat in the centre of the city, bought some beautiful furniture and hired a man to paint the rooms in new colours.
It was very difficult to get tickets for her show, because everybody wanted to see it, so she decided to give the painter two of the best seats. She hoped that this would make him work better and more willingly for her. He took the tickets without saying anything, and she heard no more about them until the end of the month, when she got the painter’s bill. I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice’s face.

We didn’t notice that it was a __  __ until he ordered us to go into the back with him.
After he warned us that he could fire at any time, he looked for the money everywhere, in the bank, from our wallets, and then he asked for our jewellery (珠宝) and we gave him all he wanted. Finally, he finished his “job” and left.
When I was a child, I felt safe with my parents in my home or wherever I was not alone. Then I began to understand the news and I learnt that __  __ things were happening “out there”, but I still kept thinking that those events were just other people’s __  __, not mine. From the moment the man walked out of the shop, I completely ___  ___. I always look around to see which kinds of people are possibly following me. Now I usually double-check everything: if I’ve locked myself in the car or in the house. I am always careful not to wear any jewellery. Whenever a stranger is getting too close or is trying to get information from me, I feel nervous. I know that it is wrong, and that not everyone is going to _  __ me again.
After all, I consider myself lucky, since nothing really bad happened to me or my friend, but since that day I haven’t felt safe any more. I hate that man not for having taken my jewellery and money, but for having deprived(剥夺)of my innocence.

I was sure to meet him again and find out how he was the next       , as I have to pass this way every day. It's not easy to be an astronaut's son. Everybody expects you to be special or perfect. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he's so special and so good at everything he does. Even in middle school he was class monitor and captain of the football team.

Well, to be honest, I often dream about being some kind of hero or doing something special-like saving a child from a burning building or discovering a new star. I was daydreaming at school one morning when my teacher said there would be a Father's Day writing competition for the whole school. "I hope we have a winner right here in my class."
When I got home, I started to think about what to write. My father is an astronaut. No, :I wouldn't start like that. That was the way others saw him. How did I see my father? Hmm...
I saw him sitting with me in the dark when I had a terrible dream. I remembered how he hugged(拥抱 ) me for hours when my dog Spotty was killed by a car. Yes, these were the things I was going to write. To me, he wasn't just a world-famous astronaut. He was my dad.
My parents and l went to school Thursday night. There were so many people in the big hall! My dad looked at me, and I shrugged(耸肩 ).
The third prize was announced and it was not me. I was relieved and disappointed at the same time. The second prize was announced. It was me.
I went up to the stage and read what I had written, "My father's son". When I finished, the people stood up and cheered. I saw my father blowing his nose. Tears (眼泪 ) were running down my mother's face. Dad cleared his throat and put his hand on my shoulder.“Son, this is the proudest moment of my life."
It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I'll never be a great hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it was enough just to be my father's son.

I used to have little passion(激情,热情)in my life. But what happened the other day changed my mind. It was then that I learned how        it is to have a passion in life.
That day I went home in Mom’s car. When Mom        at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my eye. It was a man dressed        rags. He was homeless. That didn’t interest me, because I had seen         like him before. Those people usually looked unhappy and hopeless.
But this man was        in some way. He was not sitting down with a        expression. Instead, he had a         in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious thing he had.
“Mom, why does that man have a radio        he’s homeless?” I asked.
“He       it, “ she replied.
“But why doesn’t he use the money to buy food or clothes? He       something that he didn’t need.”
“Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren’t the most important.”
That man must care so much about        that he bought a radio instead of food or clothes. I soon realized that        is the key to life.
Since then I am always thinking of        is truly important in life. A home, a meal, clothes – these things are        part of the life. What we often forget is that we all need a joy, a light on a         day. We all need a passion which gives a person the happiness they need to keep going.
