It was already late when we started going to the next town. It was about 15 miles away on the other side of the hill. There we felt sure that we would find a bed for the night. Darkness fell along the narrow road to the hill. As se climbed higher, it became colder and rain began to fall. It was difficult at times to see the road, so I asked my friend John to drive slowly.
We travelled for about 20 miles but we couldn't find the town. We were beginning to feel worried. Then the car stopped. We found that we were out of petrol (汽油), so we decided to spend the night in the car.
After eating some bread, I tried to go to sleep at once, but John, a poor sleeper, got out of the car after a few minutes and went for a walk up the hill. Soon, he came running back. From the top of the hill he saw the lights of the town in the valley below. At once, we tried to push the car to the top of the hill. In less than an hour we were in the town, and we found a hotel there easily.

下面是一篇介绍海南岛的短文,请仔细阅读,然后根据短文后面的任务要求作答。 Come to Hainan for your next holiday! Hainan Island, China's second largest island, is a wonderful place for a holiday. Situated about 30 kilometres from the southern coast of the mainland, Hainan is almost the same latitude as Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, and is often called "the oriental Hawaii". With its mild climate (气候) and favourable environment, it is a magnet for tourists and also a very nice place to live. Local people call it "the long life island"! Haikou City, the capital, and Sanya are the most popular tourist destinations. Sanya is famous for its beaches, forests, mountains, caves and gardens. It has also become the favourite location of the Miss World Competition in recent years. Hainan is an ideal place to avoid the cold northern winter and the best time to visit is between November and March. In January and February, the average temperature is between 16℃ and 24℃, rising to 25℃-29℃ in July and August. You can swim almost all the year round! Hainan is a fantastic place for nature lovers. There are green mountains and amazing tropical rainforests, home to more than 80 species of animals, including more than 600 rhesus monkeys. There are 340 different species of birds, and almost 2000 kilometres of coastline, with some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia. The most exciting place to visit is Tianya-haijiao beach, to the southwest of Sanya. Tianya-haijiao means "the end of the sky and the corner of the sea". Here you will find amazing rocks, some of them five metres high. On the rocks, you will see carvings of Chinese characters, Tianya (the end of the sky), Haijiao (the corner of the sea), Nantianyizhu (a pillar stands up in the southern sky), and Haipannantian (the sea judges the southern sky). The Tianya sunrise and the Haijiao sunset are really astonishing. Ancient poets stood on the stones and looked at the blue sky and sea. Now you can do the same thing!

There has not been a worldwide spread (传播) of flu (流行性感冒) since 1968. Experts say there should have been another by now. The so-called Spanish flu in 1918 became the most deadly flu ever recorded. It killed an estimated twenty million to fifty million people. Almost half were young adults. There were two other widespread flu in the twentieth century. The Asian flu struck in 1957, and the Hong Kong flu in 1968. Scientists at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the cause of the widespread Spanish flu is not clear. But the two others are known to have resulted from a human virus that became mixed with a bird flu virus. And that could happen again. Scientists first identified bird flu in Italy more than one hundred years ago. Bird flu is caused by type A flu viruses. Type A are the most common, and usually cause the most serious flu spread in people. Currently the most serious kind of bird flu is known as h-five-n-one. It has spread among chickens and ducks in Asia.
