Cosplay is great!

Cosplay is short for “costume play”, which means play-acting in costumes. People who take part in cosplay are called cosplayers. They usually create or make costumes of their favorite animation characters by themselves or get a tailor to make them. Sometimes they even prepare small things, like knives and earrings, which the characters wear or use in the animation.
Cosplayers are creative and proud of their work. They spend a lot of money and energy on it. They not only dress up as their favorite characters in the animation, but also act like the characters.
New trend (趋势) is on!
While Chinese fans are busy cosplaying characters in Japanese animations or movies, Japan, as a big country of cosplay, now has a trend to cosplay non-Japanese movie characters. Japanese cosplayers like the characters in Star Wars and Lord of the Rings very much. But the most popular ones are from the Harry Potter films. They have a very large number of fans in Japan. The character who is liked the best by Japanese cosplayers in Harry Potter films is Draco Malfoy, though he is Harry’s rival(对手) and always tries to get Harry and his friends into trouble.
Cosplay doesn’t have anything to do with age. Whether you are 5 or 50 years old, you can be a cosplayer if you are creative enough!

In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were not many people on earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue like this, human life on earth will not survive.
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods(方法), more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to cut down more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there will not be enough food.
What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.

During the Winter Olympics in Sochi(索契), 25,000 volunteers from Russia and other countries provided services for athletes and guests. The student Oksana Verkholyak helped translate Russian into English and Korean at the Games. She told us about their usual day.
“We get up at 7:30 in the morning. Then we have breakfast. Usually we have porridge for breakfast. There is always tea, coffee, bread and pies. After breakfast, we head for a bus stop and get on a bus which runs to the media center. It takes us 30 minutes to get there,” she said.
When volunteers arrived there, they went through the security (安全) check point. They couldn’t bring water or food with them. “Security guards check our bags. We are not allowed to have things made of metals. They check phones, video cameras, electric equipment and computers,” Oksana added.

More than 50 music students of New Milford High School in New Jersey, US, got a letter from their headmaster. The letter said that the music department of the school was in big trouble. The students had to pass a test, or the department(系) would be shut down.
On a Saturday, two officials greeted the nervous students. They asked the students to play a piece by Richard Strauss. But they had to sing the words to the music – German words!
Other tasks were also difficult. One student had to sing Mary had a Little Lamb, a children’s song, in an operatic (歌剧的) voice.
After three hours of testing, students waited for the results. They met some students from the New Jersey Youth Orchestra (管弦乐团). The judges(裁判员) gave them only a passing grade.
The worried New Milford students started to realize they had no chance. “I thought it was over,” said Bryan Olsen-Santana, a junior. “The person next to me was crying. I felt bad for her. I felt bad for myself, too, because music is everything to me.”
But then the headmaster came and told them something very dramatic (戏剧性的): “Someone’s played a joke on you!”
What was going on?
The test was part of a reality TV show (电视真人秀) called “Schooled”. The students’ parents, the school and a TV network had made it together.
Everything was fake. The two “officials” were really comedians (喜剧演员). The “students from New Jersey Youth Orchestra” were from another school. There were hidden cameras. The students’ parents were hiding as they watched.
