Christopher Columbus is famous because he found something he wasn't looking for.

In 1492, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in order to reach India. What he found was something far different. He found the New World. How did this come about? It all started in Italy.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His family didn't have a lot of money, and Christopher wasn't an only child. He didn't have much of an education until he was much older. Instead, he went to sea. He sailed around the Mediterranean(地中海) and as far north as England and Ireland.

During his travels, Columbus heard the reports of land to the west of the Madeira and Azores Islands. They were in the Atlantic Ocean west of Portugal. He wanted to know more and got maps and books on geography.

Marco Polo said that Japan was only 1,500 miles east of China. As a result, Columbus thought that Japan was only 3,000 miles west of Portugal. And 3,000 miles was a distance that ships could travel in those days.

So, Columbus decided that he wanted to get to the East by going west. He thought that if he sailed far enough west, he would sail around the world enough to reach the East. Based on his calculations(计算), Japan was only 3,000 miles away, after all.

Qi Haoran, a Junior student, was quite busy over the past winter vacation and not just with his homework. Qi, together with other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign (光盘行动). The students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. "Excuse me, do you know that nine million people around the world still haven't got enough to eat? Could you please not waste food?" They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.

China in recent years has experienced serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 20 million people for a year. It's a tradition that Chinese people offer lots of food when they invite others to dinner. Many even feel that they will lose face iftheir guests have eaten all their foods

Luckily the campaign has got the support of many. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner gives the guests who have eaten up all that they ordered a sticker. People can enjoy a free meal when they have ten stickers. More than seven restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers (剩饭剩菜) home.

Wasting food is a serious problem around the world, not only in China. It's said that two billion tons (吨) of food ends up as waste every year. This is as much as half of all the food in the world. The UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization held a "Think, Eat, Save" programme on 2 January to help reduce food waste.

To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time. It's important that everyone does their bit, just like Qi. Did you finish your meals today?
