Frank Smithson woke up and got up to turn off the alarm clock(闹钟). “Oh no!” he thought to himself. “Another day at that office; a boss (老板) who shouts at me all the time.”
As Frank went downstairs, his eyes fell on a large brown envelope (信封) by the door. He was very happy when he opened it and read the letter inside. “Bigwoods Football Pools (足球赌博公司) would like to congratulate you. You have won half a million pounds(英镑).”
Frank suddenly came to life. The cigarette fell from his lips (唇) as he let out a shout that could be heard halfway down the street.
At 11:30 Frank arrived at work. “Please explain why you're so late,” his boss said. “Go and jump in the lake,” said Frank. “I've just come into a little money so this is good-bye. Find yourself someone else to shout at.”
That evening Frank was smoking a very expensive Havana cigar (雪茄) when a knock was heard on the door. He rushed to the door. Outside were two men, neatly dressed in grey suits. “Mr. Smithson,” one of them said, “we're from Bigwoods Pools. I'm afraid there's been a terrible mistake…”

Frank Smithson woke up and got up to turn off the alarm clock,Frank醒来关掉闹钟,由此我们可以推断Frank是一个比较懒惰的人。 故选A。
根据文章的最后when a knock was heard on the door. He rushed to the door.
当听到…there's been a terrible mistake…,有一个可怕的错误的时候,Frank感觉怎样。

Long long ago, there lived two girls named Emily and Tina. Both of them had long black hair and blue eyes. One day while they were playing in the back yard (庭院), Emily heard a tinkling (叮当) sound. She jumped up. “Listen,” she told her twin. They listened. The noise came again.
This time Tina heard it. She sat up. “It came from over there,” She whispered, looking at the zinnias (鱼尾菊) far away. They came near to find it out. Then something flew out, making the same tinkling sound they had heard before. The children looked at one another. “Was it a bee?” asked Tina. “I don’t think so,” replied Emily. “Do bees make a sound like bells?” “Let’s call it the Tinkle Bee anyway,” said Tina. On February 14th,2000,my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school,my teacher told me to go to the headmaster‘s office. When I got into the office,I saw a police officer. Suddenly I realized something was wrong. The police officer told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that,we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally,we got to see our mother. It was terrible.
On the next day,the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside,my sister ran up to me. She started crying,“She‘s gone. Teresa, mommy’s gone.
She‘s dead.” I couldn’t believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.
Today when I look back,I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero (英雄) is,they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. “Fish stories” are stories of the greatest fish that a fisherman has almost caught, but for some reason, the fish always get away. Usually, these stories do not have much truth to them. One of the biggest fish stories in history was about a whale.
In 1891, a ship hunting for whales in the South Atlantic Ocean found a very large whale. While the hunters were trying to kill the whale, it sank two small boats. One man drowned, and another man, James Bartley, was lost in the ocean. However, after the hunters finally killed the whale, they cut open the whale’s stomach and found Mr Bartley inside. He was not dead!
Several weeks later, Mr Bartley seemed to have gotten over his terrible experience. The only thing he could remember was that while he was inside the whale, it was very hot. The liquid (液体) from the whale’s stomach had turned all of his skin snow white. Mr Bartley had to live with the effect from the whale for the rest of his life.
Today, many people have heard about the strange experience of Mr Bartley and do not buy it. Not one real fact has been found to prove that the events ever took place described by the sailors. No scientist or newspaper reporter was ever able to talk to Mr Bartley, and all of the stories told in magazines about Mr Bartley’s experience were explained by other sailors on the boat. Mr Bartley was probably not even a real person at all.
In 1928, after the captain (船长) of the whaling ship had died, one man asked the captain’s wife about Mr Bartley’s story. The wife said that no man who had sailed on her husband’s ship was ever swallowed by a whale.
However, this has not stopped James Bartley’s story from being repeated, and many people today still believe that it is true.

Paul and I live in the same building. His room is on the sixth floor but mine is on the fifth. He’s very careless and sometimes he gets into trouble.
Last Friday afternoon the young man and his friends went to spend the weekend on a wild island. They could swim, fish, play the guitar and sleep in the quiet place at night. They enjoyed themselves there and could do anything they wanted. On the third morning they decided to get back to the land. But their boat hit a rock and soon went down. With the villagers’ help, they swam to the bank. Luckily none of them was hurt. They took a taxi and half an hour later they arrived at our town, but it was two in the night. The young man was hungry and thirsty. He wished to get home as soon as possible. Something was wrong with the lift, so he had to go up the stairs. He stopped by my door and brought out a key. Of course he could not open the door. Half an hour passed but he failed. He became angry and shouted, “I’ll cut you down with a knife!”
The noise woke me up and I opened the door. I understood at once what was happening and said, “You’re trying to open a wrong door, Paul!”
