Home Again

Niki saw the sign first. It said “Welcome to Layton”. “We’re here!” Niki said.

“Yes,” answered Mum “Now I’ll show you where i grew up.”

Mum turned right. “This is Hill Street. Let’s find my old house.” She stopped the car in front of a red house. “Oh, Dear! It’s so different now,” Mum said sadly “Let’s see how Main Street looks.”

As the car moved up Main Street, Niki asked, “Is Main Street the way you remember it?”

“No,” Mum sighed. But then she smiled. “Look! The Layton Diner is still here! Let’s go in and get some lunch.”

Niki and Mum walked into the diner. Mum looked around and laughed. “It hasn’t changed a bit. Just like the old days!”

Just then, a woman with white hair sat at the next table. The waitress said something and the woman laughed. Niki saw Mum s eyes grow wide. “What is it, Mum?” she asked.

“That laugh,” Mum said softly. “I remember that laugh.” She turned around and looked at the woman. “I don’t know who that woman could be,” she said.

Niki looked past Mum and smiled at the woman. The woman smiled back kindly at Niki. Then the woman stood up and walked over. She looked closely at Mum’s face before she spoke. “Margaret, it’s so nice to see you after all these years.”

“You are…” Mum was a little puzzled.

“I’m Mrs. Blade,” the woman said. “Your third-grade teacher.”

Mum jumped up and hugged her. “I didn’t know who you were.”

Mrs. Blade laughed. “I didn’t know who you were either, Margaret,” she said. “But your daughter looks just like you did in third grade. And I never forget a student’s face.”

Most cars get their energy from petrol (汽油). But some cars use electricity. They get their power from large batteries (电池). There are also some cars that have both an electric motor and a petrol motor. They are called hybrid cars.

Most people think of electric cars as a new invention, but they have been around for a long time. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries electric cars were popular because the technology for petrol engines was not highly developed. But when the petrol engines became easier to make and more powerful, they became more popular. Interest in electric cars was high in the 1970s and 1980s because oil became very expensive. Recently, electric cars have again become popular because people want cars that pollute less.

Electric cars are better than petrol cars in several ways. The biggest benefit is that they can reduce pollution. In areas with a high percentage of electric cars, there is less pollution. But it is important to understand that electric cars still cause pollution. The electricity to power electric cars has to come from a power station. Unless these power stations run on solar or wind energy, they are most likely burning fossil fuels (化石燃料). The second benefit of electric cars is a reduction in the dependence on foreign oil. Since electric cars can run on electricity from coal or nuclear power (核能) stations, there is less of a need to import oil.

There are some problems with electric cars as well. One disadvantage is that electric cars are more expensive than petrol cars. This is mostly because of the high cost of the batteries. They need to be charged in special places. Right now, there aren’t enough places where people can charge the batteries. Another problem is that electric cars cannot travel as far as petrol cars. Some people are afraid that the battery will run out of electricity before they reach their destination.

Despite these problems, many people, including car industry experts, believe that the percentage of electric cars will increase in the future.

Scott’s Winter Holiday

Winter break was coming soon, and all Scott wanted to do was to go snowboarding. Unluckily, Scott’s parents had booked a weeklong tropical cruise (热带邮轮). But Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend’s house to snowboard every day at the local mountain. So he kept talking with his parents about it, but they would not change their minds. Family time is important, and it is a tradition that they spend winter break together.

When Scott got on the ship with his parents, he walked around to check everything out. He couldn’t believe how great everything was. The dining room looked like a palace; the game room had all of his favorite games. Then Scott saw the surfing pool (冲浪池). It wasn’t a big pool, but it had big waves, and the people who were riding the waves made it look like a lot of fun.

Scott asked his parents if he could put his swim shorts on so that he could try surfing. They said, “ Of course.” And much to Scott’s surprise, they wanted to try surfing too.

When Scott and his parents had their swim suits on, they headed back to the surfing pool. Scott’s dad went first and only lasted about five seconds. Then it was his mom’s turn. She actually made it five seconds longer than his dad did. When it was Scott’s turn, he was excited and nervous. Then the waves started. It felt similar to snowboarding but different at the same time. On his first ride, Scott rode for almost 30 seconds. He enjoyed himself a lot.
