It has been three months since I came to Sydney, Australia. I fell in love with this sunny city in the southern Hemisphere (半球) when I first visited last March. So I quit my job in Taiwan and started a working holiday here.
My days in Sydney are busy. Every morning I wake up at 6. After a quick breakfast, I catch a train to North Sydney, where I start my work for the day—house cleaning.
Some of you may wonder why a college graduate like me would do such heavy physical labor(劳动). But in Australia people don’t think like this. As long as you work hard, you get the respect you deserve.
I usually clean houses until 4 pm. Most of the customers are nice people who greet me, smile at me and thank me for my work. For every hour I earn 17 Australian dollars, which is just over the minimum wage(最低工资) line. But I’m quite happy with that. It covers my living costs, and I can even save some money for my parents and my future education.
A working holiday is a good choice for young people. You get the amazing experience of living in a different country while also earning money.
Once a week after a hard day, I’d go to a nearby bar to have some drinks with my friends and enjoy the beautiful night view of the Sydney harbor. It’s a great way to relax.
Being in a foreign country alone, I sometimes feel homesick. I miss the delicious minced pork rice(卤肉饭) from my hometown in Tainan. I miss my family too. But most of the time, I enjoy my stay here in Sydney. With the fresh air, the sea, and the mountains, I feel peaceful and rewarded.
