We all stared down at the step. There was child’s handwriting in chalk (粉笔) there. I was very         . I hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I       : “Not me, Dad.”

Most students have biology classes in the classrooms or the labs in China. But several days ago,I had a biology class outside in my American schoo1.
My biology teacher,Mr.Kwak, divided us into three groups and asked us to play a game about natural selection(选择)and how birds find food.

Today, I felt terrible. My head was full of problems and confusion(暴乱). I decided to take a walk even though I didn't know where to go. The most special thing happened when I was out for this walk.
I saw an old man sitting on a chair. He was a seller of second-hand shoes. I thought he looked at least 70 years old. He seemed so tired and nobody was buying his shoes. I wanted to give him something but I had not brought anything with me.
Then, a little girl came toward him. I heard the child say, "Grandfather, may I polish (擦干净) your shoes?" That old man took pity on her, smiled and gave her a shoe to polish.
The girl told him she needed money to buy her brother a new school uniform.
"Oh, little girl. Just stop doing this. Come with me and I will buy you a uniform." Then they walked to a market , and he bought her brother a uniform.
The girl said “thanks” to him and left, leaving the old man smiling.
He walked away from the market, but I stopped him. I whispered in his ear, "You are a hero! Thank you for your kindness!"  As I walked away, I looked back and I could see him still smiling.
I was blown away by the kindness I had just seen.  Someone who had so little was so generous! Amazing! My own sadness had completely disappeared, chased way by the light of this kind act.

More than anything else in the world, Lion liked being King of the jungle.  He walked around, showing off his power and pride.
Each day Lion took a long lazy sleep under the shade of his favourite tree.  He always dreamed of weaker animals bowing(鞠躬) before him.
One day Mouse ran through the jungle and tripped over Lion’s huge paws.  Lion woke up with a start.  “How dare you wake me up! ”  he shouted angrily.  Lion grabbed Mouse with one paw.  “On the second thought, I’m in the mood for the snack, and you’ll make a delicious meal.”, he said.
Mouse cried out, “King Lion, please spare(饶恕) me! If you let me live, I’ll always remember your kindness.  And, some day, I might be able to help you.”
“ How could such a powerless little mouse ever help me?” That thought made Lion laugh so much that he decided to let Mouse go.  A week later, Lion was walking through the jungle on the way to his favourite tree when he stepped onto a hunter’s net.  The net scooped him up. No matter how he twisted and turned, he couldn’t escape.

One day they went to ask the old bird, “Can you tell us which one of us is more important?” The old bird didn't give them the answer at once.  However, he asked them to get some bananas on the other side of the river and bring them to him.
So the elephant and the monkey went to the river, but the water ran so fast that the monkey was afraid.
“Get on my back, Monkey,” said the elephant, “I shall take you there. I'm big and strong, and I can swim across the river.”
Soon they got to the other side. The elephant tried to reach the bananas, but they were too high. “Wait a minute, please. I can climb,” said the monkey. He quickly ran up the tree and gave the bananas to the elephant.
Then they came back happily to the old bird and showed him the bananas. “Now, you see, the elephant is strong,” said the old bird with a smile, “but he couldn't get the bananas; the monkey is quick, but he couldn't, either. Only you two could do the work well when you helped each other.”

Sneakers are a kind of shoes worn by many people all over the world.       , no one really knows where the word “sneaker” came from. Some say it came from the old English verb “sneak”, which means to move silently and quickly. The only thing we are       is that when you put on a pair of sneakers, you feel light-hearted, light-footed and ready to play.

Sneakers of some kind are used by those who play tennis, basketball, and other sports. New design has been made        for people who run slowly. In fact American children of         ages would much rather play in sneakers than anything else.
New York City once held a poetry competition for children. The subject was only “sneaker”. One prize winner called     poem “The Sneaker and the World Peace”. “When everyone is wearing sneakers,” she said, “it will be impossible to        .”
American school children can be seen every day      sneakers of all colors. They put them on in the morning and take them off at bedtime. Sneakers are      washed. Some children think the older and dirtier they are, the         loveable they are. When their sneakers wear out, children hate to throw them off. How do you explain the closeness between      and sneakers? Perhaps another young winner in the New York Poetry Contest said it best. “A shoe is just a shoe,” he said. “But a sneaker is a friend.”
