题目内容

There is something in the world. It has no shape, no color and no weight. It can't be seen or touched. But everyone wants it very much People try to get it in many ways. Some people think money means it, so they try to make more money; some people believe that knowledge can bring it to them, so they study very hard; some other people find only good health can make themselves get it, so they take part in all kinds of sports and games. Now, you may ask what on earth the mysterious thing is. That's HAPPINESS. I can't give you the exact meaning of happiness, but I'm sure if you love and help others, you'll get it.

I'll never forget an old lady. She lives in a small house alone. It's said that her husband and her son died in a traffic accident. What a sorrow life she has! But the old lady often helps others with a smile. Whenever it snows, she is always the first to clean the paths (小路). She looks after several children living nearby. I am one of them. I often remember the stories she told us and her kind smile. Perhaps she is unlucky, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of laughter and love.

But I'm sad to see some people getting their happiness in bad ways. They speak loudly in cinemas and meeting rooms; they destroy (损坏) trees to enjoy themselves and they laugh at others' shortcomings. Perhaps they feel happy at that time, but they will never get true happiness because they have destroyed others' happiness.

Now I know what happiness is. It means kindness, love and unselfishness. Above all, only bringing happiness to others can make yourself happy.

The class teacher thought that hobbies were important for children. So she encouraged all her students to have one, and sometimes she arranged hobby shows for their parents to see as a result.

One morning the teacher told the class to have a holiday and get their hobby things to school before 5 p.m. A hobby show would be held the following afternoon.

So in the afternoon, the students with nothing to show did their lessons at school as usual, while the lucky ones had a holiday to go home for their hobby works.

When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. “I don’t believe Tommy has a hobby,” she thought. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies (蝴蝶) in a glass case. The teacher liked the samples (标本) very much and put them on a desk in the classroom. But, to her surprise, Tommy picked them up again and began to leave.

“What are you doing, Tommy?” She asked. “Those things must stay here until tomorrow afternoon. That’s when the parents are coming to see them.”

“I know that,” answered Tommy, “and I will bring them back tomorrow, but my big brother doesn’t want them to be out of our house at night.”

“But, aren’t the butterflies yours?” asked the teacher.

“No,” answered Tommy. “They are my brother’s.”

“But Tommy, you should show your own hobby here, not somebody else’s!”

“I know that,” answered Tommy. What surprised her most was the answer. “My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.”

I was born in Damyang, a beautiful place known for its bamboo forests in Korea. I spent much time in the forests painting pictures of the bamboo. Painting is one of my talents. I lived there until last year when my family moved to New York. My mother, a scientist, was asked to come work here.

“There are no bamboo forests,”I said , “there is nothing to paint in New York.” “Don’t worry, my dear daughter. You will find many things to see and paint there,” said my mother . “I will miss home,” I said. “Then you can paint pictures of your favorite places. They will make you feel at home,” she said. So when we moved, I brought my forest paintings with me.

New York was not easy at first. I missed home a lot. Yet when I looked at my paintings of bamboo, I felt much better. I soon found friends at school too. They also like painting, and we now paint in a group after school.

Last month, we had a new neighbor, Varvara, an old lady who moved from Russia, to be closer to her daughter. She was sad to leave her home. My mother and I often visited her. She told us her homesickness and everything about her hometown Vyborg. I could picture her home in my head.

Varvara missed her home so much that she became ill. I worried about her and I wanted to do something for her. I had ever been in her situation before . At least , I had my forest paintings of home. However, she didn’t even have that . Unless...

A few days later, I met Varvara on the stairs. She looked better but still sad. I gave her my gift: a painting of Vyborg. I had painted it from her memories.

She began to cry as she saw the painting. At first , I was worried that she didn’t like it. Later, she told me that those were tears of joy. I knew just how she felt-wherever you go , hometown is always with you.
