The school bell rang loudly. Everybody packed their bags and got ready to go home. Usually David's mother would take him home from school but today she was not there. David waited for 15 minutes before he walked home.

When he reached home, he knocked on the door as he did not bring his keys. To his surprise, no one answered the door. David thought his mother was in the toilet so he waited patiently for her. After a few minutes there was still no answer.

David knocked again but still no one answered. He was about to go to the nearby coffee shop where his father worked to get the keys, when he heard the friendly voice of his neighbor, John.

David told him that no one was at home and John's mother suggested that David stay in their house to wait for his mother. David and John played happily till evening when David's mother came back.

David thanked John and his family before he went back to his house. David's mother explained to David that she had a backache and she had to see the doctor. From this experience, David learnt an important lesson, "Neighbors are people who help each other."

For twelve children aged between ten and fifteen, Saturdays are spent learning the art of cooking. Their weekly lessons in small classes are so popular that there is a waiting list of 30 children who want to do the course. Parents pay £280 for the course where their children can have fun and learn how to make good food.

Class member Bill, aged ten, says, “I love my mom’s cooking and now I can do it better than her. The teachers always make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we’ve made.”

Flora is twelve, and she says, “I did a meal for ten friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mom suggested I take up a hobby, instead of doing nothing on weekends. I was happy staying at home, so I wasn’t too keen at first. I’m really glad I decided to come, though.”

Their teacher, Philippe, says, “The students are great. They pay attention and remember things better than adults, although the kitchen isn’t always as tidy when they’re cooking! As adults, we’re always learning more about food. If parents interest their children in cooking while they are young, they’ll have enough skills to make food for themselves when they leave home.”
