Yesterday my mother went into a shop to buy some fruit and vegetables. She put her basket and handbag down on a table and went to look at some apples in the window. There were a lot of people in the shop. When the shopkeeper was free, he weighed half a kilo of apples for my mother, put them in a paperbag and said, “That will be twelve pence, Mrs. Baker.” My mother said, “My money is in my handbag on that table.” She went to the table, but the handbag was not there! The basket was on the table, but the handbag was not! My mother was surprised.

Suddenly there was a lot of noise at the door of the shop, and a policeman came in, he was holding a man and my mother's bag. “Has anyone lost her handbag?” the policeman asked. “Yes,” my mother answered. “That's mine.” The policeman looked in the bag and asked, “How much money did you have?” “Two pounds and a few pence,” my mother said. “It's all here,” the policeman said and gave her the bag.“I caught the thief outside. Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, “If anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea.”
“OK, Dad,” said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, “Where is your father?” The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it.
