Two old men lived in a room on the third floor of an old people’s home. Both men were very old and badly ill, and they spent 24 hours a day in bed in the room.
Luckily, one of the old men had his bed by the window, and every day he spent hours telling his friend far from the window what he could see through the window. He told him about the traffic going by, the children playing in the park opposite, and the birds flying in trees. The old man far from the window got a lot of pleasure from hearing about the world outside, but after a time he began to get rather unhappy. How nice it would be, he thought, if he had the bed by the window and could see everything for him, instead of just hearing about it.
One night, the man by the window called to his friend, “Quick! Pull the alarm by your bed; I don’t think I can get through the night!” But his friends, expecting an empty bed by the window, did nothing---he just closed his eyes and went back to sleep.
The next morning, the nurse found the man dead in his bed by the window.
The old man was very excited as they moved him into the empty bed by the window. He sat up in bed, pulled back the curtain, looked out --- and saw only a wall.

Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring of my life. After I was born, I played a lot, and then I started school. I learned many new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days: some days the sun shone(闪耀), and some days it didn’t.
In my twenties, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a child. In those days, I didn’t have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard. And so, I started to get some white hairs. The summer of my life passed quickly.
Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student, and then an engineer. My home was much quieter. I started walking slowly. One day I stopped working. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color and give us delicious fruits.
But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Winter has come, I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left. I will enjoy them to the end.

Has a doctor ever given you a note to take to the chemist for some medicine? Are you able to read the note easily? Some doctors write clearly , but most doctors do not. Chemists(药剂师) have more chances to read doctors’ notes, but sometimes doctors write so badly that even the chemist can’t read them.
One day a lady wrote to a doctor inviting him to have dinner at her house. The doctor wrote an answer, but he didn’t write clearly and the lady couldn’t read it.
“What shall I do?” she said to her husband, “I don’t know whether he is coming or not. I don’t want to give him a telephone call and say that I can’t read his writing.”
Her husband thought a moment, then he had an idea.
“Thank you,” said his wife. “That’s a very good idea.”
She went to the chemist’s shop and gave the doctor’s note to the chemist. The chemist looked at it very carefully. Then he said politely, “Could you wait a moment, madam?” He went to the back of the shop. After a few minutes he returned carrying a large bottle. He gave the bottle to the lady and said, “Three times a day and one spoonful at a time.”

To err is human. To blame(责备) the other guy is even more human.
Common sense is not all that common.
Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse?
These three popular misquotes(戏谑的引语)are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do. The original quote about human nature went like this: “To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).” This saying mirrors an ideal: People should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite – find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a mark of great maturity(成熟).
Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine. Common sense does not seem to be common for large companies, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company, “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.”
And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if a good excuse is “good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth?
小题1:Which of the following is NOT based on common sense?
A.A secretary works to a timetable.
B.A company’s next move follows a good plan.
C.A girl goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather.
D.A man tries to manage everything in a large company.
小题2:What can we infer from the last paragraph according to the writer?
A.A good excuse is the same as honesty.
B.Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas.
C.Unpleasant truth is better than a good excuse.
D.Making a good excuse is sometimes a better idea.
小题3:What would be the best title for this passage?
A.A Mirror of Human Nature
B.To Blame or to Forgive
C.A Mark of Maturity
D.Truth or Excuse
What’s your idea about success? Some people say that beginners have all the luck, while others believe that success    1  only with practice. In fact, I feel both of these statements (陈述) are not true all the time. Each is true in some ways    2   not in others.
For example, I went to a drawing competition many years ago and    3   surprisingly. As a prize, I got a film ticket to see “Titanic”. I was really    4   because it was the first time I had taken part in any competition. Thinking that I might be lucky again, I   5   joining in other art competitions. But the result was that I    6  won again. I accepted the fact that the other people had a    7   artistic ability than I did. Art was not something I was especially interested in and I had never practiced the different art skills. So, the   8   I produced were not of a very high standard.
These experiences taught me a lot. Though I might have been lucky    9  , I also need to put in hard work. As we know,    10   makes perfect. So I believe success builds on less luck and chance.
